    3. Dear Barb, I didn't mean to scare you. I've been computing since the early 70's or so and have had only 1 true failure (I've had 2 'stupid' failures directly attributable to my own actions) in all that time over many, many, computers. 3. List manager, Myra, and interested listmembers: I am convinced that your John William WEST [Sr.] was a son of James of Bladen [Bladen Co., NC]. There are several reasons I so believe but the primary ones are John's absence from the Bladen census of 1840, the naming patterns of the Bladen/Duplin WEST folks for his children, such as Noel, John, William and Daniel. In addition, at one time, one of the WEST men named James lived in near proximity to Thomas FRAZIER [will have to search for that source, but it is here among my voluminous paper files.] Regards, Fran [email protected] ----- Original Message ----- From: Myra Chambers <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, October 27, 2003 2:29 PM Subject: Re: [WEST-L] John Wm. 3. Barbara, Computers can crash in different ways depending on the problem. If a hard disk 'goes' it often, but not always, gives a warning -- strange sounds and intermittent errors -- at best. If a cpu stops working -- it just stops and stares back with a blank screen without blinking. If a memory chip goes bad, you will get failures and faults and error messages. Sometimes your operating system goes bad -- that is the easiest. You can reload your operating system. The bottom line is you know you've crashed because it just stops doing what it does so well -- work. If your hard disk stops working you probably, but not always, have lost all your data -- unless you back up, back up, back up. Not just one back up disk, but several backed up on a rotating basis. Some folks use zip drives because they hold more. I now use CD-R disks -- it just take a few minutes to back everything up on a couple of CD roms. I also am attached to a network here at home and another at work. So periodically (once a week), I move files to another computer on each network. Each week I have my updated files on CD disks and two computers in separate cities. Am I paranoid? Oh, yes. I had a computer crash on me -- a hard drive went bad with little warning. And that (for me) is the short answer. Allen Rev. E. 3. Hello all: Myra wrote that her computer crashed and this got me to wondering what actually happens when this event occurs. What are the symptoms? What happens to all your saved files and your family database? What do you do to correct it or to recover from the crash? I keep my family database updated on disk, in case my machine crashes, but I've never understood what the term means or what actually happens. Enlightenment, anyone? Isaac West ,son of Joseph West and Jane Owen ,was living in Randolph Co., NC by 1784. Probably much earlier. He had a son Jacob who married Sarah/Sallie Harlan the granddaughter of Nancy Ward a well known cherokee. I have been told that Jacob and Sarah married in TN. Lived in GA for many years before they were forced to go to OK. just prior to the trail of tears. Whats of special interest is that I remember reading that either them or someone connected was from Roane Co.,TN? Nancy Wards daughter Kati was married 3 times. Her first marriage was to Samuel Candy. Samuel and Kati's son Samuel "Candy, Jr. married a Elizabeth West. I have always believed that this Elizabeth West was somehow related to the above Jacob West but I don't know how.... Kati 3rd. marriage was to Ellis Harlan . Without muddying the waters too much, Ellis Harlan was from a Quaker family from Chester Co.,PA just as John West and Jane Owen. Ellis Harlans daughter, Sally Harlan was the one that married Jacob West above. Jacob Wests wife,Rosannah Lewis, her neice also married into this family. Her brother, David's daughter, Hanna, married, Sarah Harlan's brother Ezekial Harlan. These Wests along with the Harlans were living in Indian Ter. in TN, GA, and OK. The last piece that I wanted to throw out there was that Jacob's brother, John T. West (my line) lived in Franklin Co.,VA. There is a West cemetery there where several of my family members are buried. In this cemetery are some CLOUD graves as well. I have wondered how they might be related to the WEST's Anyway, this post might be worth saving for a few of you interested in this West line. Lisa Greensboro, NC
