    3. Fran, Thanks so much for sharing your West information. It'll be great reading it and connecting with our John William. Thanks Again, Susie "West" Morris ----- Original Message ----- From: Frederick Powell Sr Sent: Friday, November 07, 2003 9:27 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [WEST-L] Bladen Co., NC WEST research http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncbladen/articles.htm Listowner, Myra, Clem and fellow WEST-L listmembers, Jason BORDEAUX has kindly placed on-line my Bladen Co., NC WEST article. I invite _documented_ corrections, any additions, comparison of notes and questions. A suggestion is to read my documentation. A great deal of information, not in the article, will be found there. Listowner, Myra, and Clem, I could not have completed as much on this WEST line as I have without your information on John William WEST. Thanks to both of you. If I made errors of transcription, please let me know, and Jason will correct them on-line. Thanks very much. 1. Re: [WEST-L] Cherokee
    2. Robert T. West (Tim)
    3. Barbara, My ancestor Jacob West married Sarah (Sallie) Harlan, granddaughter of Nancy Ward (Nanye-Hi), "Beloved Woman" of the Cherokee. At about the same time one of Sallie's half-brothers, John Candy, married an Elizabeth West that was almost certainly related to Jacob and may have been his sister, though there is some confusing and contradictory information about this- there may have been two Elizabeth Wests. Also, the Isaac West who was (at least) very likely Jacob's father- son of Joseph West (older brother of Benjamin West the artist) and Jane Owen- married Rosannah Lewis, who's brother David had a daughter (Hannah Lewis) who married Ezekial Harlan, daughter of Catherine Kingfisher, daughter of Nancy Ward. There seem to have been a lot of the formerly-Quaker Wests marrying into the Cherokee tribe in this period. Hope some of this helps. Robert T. West ("Tim") -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] Sent: Nov 7, 2003 8:21 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [WEST-L] Cherokee Tim, According to "The History of the Cherokee" by Emmett Starr, and the archaelogists at the Shawnee National Forest, there was a large band of Cherokee that left the East prior to the removal. There was an abandoned fort in Southern Illinois that was home to this band as they were discovered by an explorer whose name escapes me right now, pre- Lewis and Clark in the mid 1700's. These Cherokee were obviously not originally from this area, I never guess that would be an assumption. This band dispersed and assimilated after an earthquake in that area I have become acquainted with a few researchers that have found stories like mine of family either living in that area or going to that area for some tribal activity into the late 1800's and early 1900's. The surnames that are associated with my family are Burnett, West and Winningham. I would be very interested in trying to find a connection with any Wests that you have that were known to have married Cherokee. 3. I am descended from a West family from Accomack Virginia, that migrated west. It is rumored in that family that there is Indian heritage, but I have not found any evidence of that. One uncle told his father, my grandpa said his mother was Indian. She was the oldest child of Philip Parker West and Pearline or Pauline Roberts, married in Muskingum County Ohio. Later migrated on to Tama County Iowa. Philip Parker West was born in the Accomack Virginia area. If anyone knows anything of this family, I would like to hear from you. It appears PPWest must have died soon after moving to Iowa. His son Alexander lived on there for many years, he was considered an old timer there. I would love to find contact with someone who descends from Alexander. He was a brother to my great grandmother, and I would like to know what family history they may know, and the genealogy of that family of descendants. I would really like to know if there is any Indian Heritage. 2. Have any of you tried researching the Indian tribal books. Most of them are in the libraries and give the names. (I am sure not all of them are named as some of them were afraid of being known they were part Indian or if the wife was Indian they did not mention it for a long time. Now, no one thinks anything of it. el

    3. I an descended from Soloman West of nw S. C. He married Sarah ? born in MS. And had children in MS. And La. Was in Ark. In 1850 and Tx. Falls County by 1860. His son James S. West,my ggrandfather, was back in La. By 1880. He died there in Lasalle Parish in 1910. He ,my grandfather and father were all short dark men. I figured a Cherokee-Choctaw connection. I have no proof of that however. I am married to a Waccamaw Indian and my children and grands all belong to that tribe and they adopted me with no problem. I do research by computer only and have a tuff time getting all the info I need as do most of you. Family would not talk about my grandfather. They had been accepted as dark complected whites and didn't need the aggravation. I welcome the aggravation and am proud of it. I also hope to find a concrete connection, but if I don't I am still American Indian. As are some of you. 3. Barbara, I'm not sure I'm reading your message correctly, but the Cherokee were never one of the five or six (depending on the period in question) nations in the Illinois Confederacy, and would be astounded at the suggestion, I think. :-) There are certainly Wests that passed through NC, intermarried with Cherokee, and ended up in Oklahoma, but I don't know if there's any connection with your line. 3. Good afternoon list members. I'm searching for some West ancestors and am hoping that someone here might be able to help me. I am looking for the children of Hugh S. West and E. Elizabeth Singer...this couple was married in Johnstown, PA on 9-26-1901. By 1920 they were residing in Canton, OH. If anyone has any information I would be grateful. Mary West born approximately 1903 in Pennsylvania Francis West(dau) born approximately 1906 in Pennsylvania Gertrude West born approximately 1908 in Pennsylvania Robert West born approximately 1915 in Pennsylvania In addition to the persons noted above I am looking for another Gertrude West..she would be the SISTER of HUGH S. WEST listed above and was born between 1880 and 1885, due to the timing of her birth I feel she was born in Michigan, however, there is a very slim chance she was born in the Blair/Centre County areas of Pennsylvania. Once again, any info is appreciated. Thanks in advance. Dawn West
