    3. Hi Judy, There is a book in deed about the Wests from NC. I believe its by Lethia Brock. Thats as close as I can get. It's mentioned several times in info on the Wests I believe on Gen Forum.Put in John or Jonathan West and it should give you something.I have seen it in the library in KC Mo. But only glanced through as it isn't my Wests.Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. Mary

    3. Hi , No that's another Jonathan. But there's a lot on the net about your Jonathan. Acquilla was his Father. He was born in NC. His first wife died and he remarried just a couple of years before his death in early 1860. Try Gen Forum. I researched him as I thought he was mine but he isn't. Hope this helps. Mary

I think that Jonathan could be My GGrandfather.I need clarification of something. Did both Jonathan and his wife die or just the wife? If he is my relative he left the children there and moved to In. and remarried and then after I guess ,losing that wife, moved to Iowa after marrying in Ohio to Matilda Harris. Could this be your relative? This is in reply to filename # 69 in the 2003 list. Thanks , Mary

    2. Karon Mazie
    3. Obit for Jesse Clarence West 1961 Jesse Clarence West, 78, retired laborer, died at 6 o'clock Sunday morning, August 20. 1961, in his ground floor apartment in the Earl Spooner building on 4th Street, next to the Bohemian Mutual Insurance office. Death was due to cancer of the lungs. He had been ailing for four years and made 5 trips to University Hospitals in Iowa City. On one trip he stayed 6 days in the hospital. On the other trips he returned home the same day. Jesse Clarence West, son of Issac and Hannah Steuart West was born October 10, 1882, on a farm east of Toledo, Iowa. He attended Otter Creek School near his farmhome. In 1901 the West family went to Missouri and Jesse began working in the oil fields, first in Kansas, then in Oklahoma and Texas. He was laying an oil pipeline at Independence, Kansas, when he met Miss Grace Ellen Hutchison who was living with her uncle and aunt who ran a boarding house. Mr. West stayed at the boarding house. The young couple were married March 7, 1914, at Independence, Kansas. Following the marriage, Mr. West worked in Oklahoma and Texas, then returned to Toledo, IA, in November 1914. He spent 2 years in Toledo, working at odd jobs, then returned to Sycamore, Kansas, where he worked 4 years, first in a brick yard and then at Sinclair Oil Company. Then he came back to Toledo and worked for the Electric Light & Power company. Later he was employeed as a farm laborer by farmers in this area. He also had his own team of horses and dug basements, plowed gardens and did grading work for the highways. During World War II he and his team were employed at the wood preserving plant in Tama. Mr. West and his family moved to Tama in 1929. For 21 years they rented the house owned by Mrs. H. H. Walen at 701 Beautiful Street. Fourteen years ago Mr. West sold his team and he retired the following year. Three years ago he and his wife moved to the business district and took an apartment in the Soleman Annex. Later they lived on the 3rd floor at the Clifton hotel for 15 months. Finding it difficult to climb the stairs because of their advanced age, they moved to the groundfloor apartment in the Spooner building on 4th Street last September. Surviving are the wife, three daughters, Mrs. James (Velma) Chama east of Toledo, Mrs. Violet Kubik in Arizone and Mrs. Rene (Mervin) Van Tomme of Montezuma, and a son Robert West of Chicago. Ten grandchildren, two great grandchildren and a brother, Charles West of LaJoya, Texas also survive. Predeeding him in death were a son and a daughter in infance, another girl at age 3 ½ years and two brothers and a sister. FUNERAL SERVICES WEDNESDAY Funeral service for Mr. West was held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, August 23, 1961 at the Harrison Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul DeVos, pastor of the Tama Baptist church in charge. James Black was soloist and Mrs Lloyd Strine played the piano accompaniment. Bearers were Jack Spooner, P. W. Higgesbotham, Tom Davis, Paul Buwalda, Edison Dupre and James Blazek. Interment was in Hayes cemetery in the area east of Toledo where he was reared.

    3. I have some new information on my West line, and I am sharing it in the hopes it will connect with someone else researching and we can compare notes. Thank you Karon Mazie Obituary Tama County, Iowa 1901 Alexander W. West was born in Muskindon (Muskingum) County, Ohio Dec. 16, 1831 and died at Iowa City, January 1. 1901. While 8 years old the family moved to Morgan County Ohio, where he grew to manhood. In 1854 he, prompted by the desire to find larger fields to cuiltivate and to build for himself a better home, came west and entered the land in Tama county which was him home when he died. After entering his land, he went to Jackson County, Iowa where in 1856 he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah C Sherlock. To them were born three children. In 1862 he came back to Tama County and began the improvement of the land he had entered. The fall of 1864 he married Miss Mary Feeley. By this union, there were nine children, four of whom are living. All the children and wife were at the funeral. Mr. West ! was a man of very pronounced convictions, never faltering admist the most severe reverses, when he believed a thing to be right. A man of robust constitution, he lavbered earnestly all through the years of hardship that must be met in the development of a new country. Thus again, we are called upon to lay away one more of the old land marks. One of those who braved hardships of the development of Tama County. 1. [WEST-L] DNA testing
    2. Hi cousins: Most of you have seen some of my earlier postings about our Y-DNA project for the WEST surname. Our web page for the project is at: http://web.utk.edu/~corn/westdna/ In addition to the Y-DNA test which is used to track the paternal line, two other DNA test are offered by Family Tree DNA: http://www.familytreedna.com 1) mtDNA tests a) maternal match $179 (group rate) b) mtDNAPlus, high resolution maternal match $239 mtDNA is passed from a mother to all of her children. Children get no mtDNA from their fathers. It is not as good for genealogy as the Y-DNA test because we have lost the surnames of many of our female ancestors. mtDNA also mutates very slowly, so there is less variation, and matches will occur that pre-date the adoption of surnames. If you have a hypothesis that two women were related, and if you can find an unbroken female descent from those two women, the mtDNA test can be used to determine whether they have the same mtDNA. Finding an unbroken female line from each ancestor is the key, and of course the major difficulty. This test can also determine your maternal haplogroup. Haplogroup is a broad grouping of maternal ancestors. It is 'deep ancestry' going back thousands of year. You will not determine who you maternal ancestor was 10,000 years ago, but you will learn where she lived (in a broad sense), and from that you can read archaelogical sources that try to reveal how those people lived. Many of you have read or heard of the "Seven Daughters of Eve" book. The "seven" are really haplogroups as determined by the mtDNA. All that said, this test can determine whether your mtDNA is derived from native american ancestry. Remember you have to have an unbroken female line from your mother to the female ancestor who is thought to be native american. 2) DNA print test. This test analyses DNA found on all of the chromosomes. The claim is that they can determine percentages of your ancestry. They report percentage of Indo-European, East Asian, African, and Native American. The test is very controversial in its accuracy at determining minor ancestry, and I do not recommend it unless you have the money and your curiosity is overwhelming. The test is good at determining your majority ancestry. But most of us know that by looking in the mirror each morning. The problem is one of genetic mixing (recombination) that occurs every generation. If you are the offspring of an European male and an NA female, you have 50% NA genes. If you marry a person of European ancestry, your child has 25% NA genes. If your child marries a person of European ancestry, their child has 12.5% NA genes. You can see that there is a dilution of the NA ancestry each generation. Once you drop below 25%, the confidence of the test is very low. Sooooo - if your known or suspected NA ancestor is more that about 4 generations back, the DNA print result for percentage NA becomes questionable in its determination of minor ancestry. Both the mtDNA and DNA print test can be taken by males or femalies. If you are interested in either of the above tests, you can get the discount price for our WEST surname project. Email me if you have questions. Dennis West coordinator for WEST surname DNA project
