Hello Cousins: I updated our WEST surname DNA project webpage today: http://web.utk.edu/~corn/westdna/ We have a descendent of Joseph WEST/Jane Owen in the project. This is the line that includes the artist Benjamin WEST. Benjamin was one of the brothers of Joseph WEST. I placed a digital image of a painting by Benjamin WEST on the web page, but somehow messed it up. It is obvious that I have none of the artist's genes. I'll try to correct it tomorrow. If you have an oral tradition that you are related to the artist Benjamin WEST, we can now know for sure. Email me if you have any questions. Dennis West in Knoxville, TN descended from James WEST, 1786, NC

Marthella: Where? My gg-grandmother's name was a Mary Jane Allen West, though she was born January 17, 1824. She was born in Baldwin County, Georgia and I assume came with her husband and children to the Dallas, Texas area in 1872. One of the sons settled in south Oklahoma....Cotton County. Susan West "I found a couple of pages with MARTHA ALLEN WEST but no one knew where she came from!"
Susan, I must have you confused with FRANIGAN? Both with almost the same name to search for..I will try to sort you out and find your Grandmother's tomorrow! Promise! Marty, The "Grandmother West" is the straw I am grabbing at. She would have been my great-great grandmother. Her daughter, Mattie (Martha Alice West), married Willis Marion "Doc" Rogers about 1879 in Texas. (My great-grandparents) Mattie was born about 1865 and died about 1890. Mattie and Doc had 3 children, Mary Magadalene (aka: Molly), William Henry and John Burton. "Grandmother West" was still alive in November of 1955 when my grandfather, William Henry, died in Duncan, Oklahoma. In his funeral book under the section for those who sent flowers was the entry "Grandmother West". That would make her somewhere around 100 years old and I am hoping that someone may recognize the someone in their West family line that lived to be that old. Unfortunately it is the only glimpse I have of Mattie's parentage. Thanks for your patience with my inquiry. I found a couple of pages with MARTHA ALLEN WEST but no one knew where she came from! Not a one of them. All you can do, really, is look up WEST pages and go through the MARTHA'S they have. Tedious, but may be worth the time and effort if you can find her that way. Her children are easily found, if you want to try that way. I will look out for her, it's just one more name to check for... Good Luck! Eva, Unfortunately I do not know -- the "Burton" does not seem to appear in my "Ro/d/gers" line so I am guessing (actually hoping) it may be from the West ancestry. Do you have anything on it? Thanks very much for some of the leads -- it at least gives me some lines to look at more closely... Marthella, in response to your questions: Martha Alice (West) Rogers also known as Mattie (died about 1890) was married to Willis Marion "Doc" Rogers. They had 3 children, Mary/Molly (1880), William Henry (1885) and John Burton (1899). I do know that Mattie died when John Burton was still an infant (ca 1890) and Doc's brother, Henry Rogers, raised John Burton in Cooperton, Oklahoma where John is buried. Doc moved to Stephens County, Oklahoma about 1891 and remarried to Rachel Mathews. Mary/Molly Rogers married W. Jess Green. She was hit by a car and killed, in December of 1936, in Holdenville, Oklahoma. William Henry Rogers (my grandfather) died in November 1955 in Duncan, Stephens County, Oklahoma. I do not know who Mattie's parents are -- the only written clue I have about them is the "Grandmother West" entry in William Henry Rogers' funeral book. I never even thought about her still being alive in 1955. The only other story tied to the West family is that Mattie was the only daughter of a wealthy family from the Dallas area. They did not approve of my great-grandfather because he was a "cowpoke" and so Doc and Mattie eloped. I hope this clears the lines up a little bit -- but as you can see I really don't have any "West" details to work with. I am just hoping that someone will recognize the 95-101 year life-span. Thanks again for all the interesting leads -- if you have any more, please fling them my way! Isn't family fun! Paula: My James A. West moved to Cotton County, Oklahoma....I don't know when because I have them enumerated in the 1920 Pottawatomie County census. I think right after that, they moved to south Oklahoma. My James is buried in Walters, Oklahoma @ the IOOF Cemetary. My great-grandfather, Aurelious Henry West is enumerated as A. Henry West in the same census.
