Please does anyone have any information relating to this school or any of the teachers listed below? I am researching the history of Charlton Mackrell C of E Primary School - formerly West Charlton National School - initially for an exhibition at the 150th anniversary reunion weekend last summer and eventually in an illustrated book. We still possess logbooks, registers and other records dating back to the 1860s and have consulted items held in the Somerset and Dorset ROs, the PRO and the National Society's archives. The schoolmistress in 1851 was Miss Elizabeth Rooke, of London, who was succeeded by many different schoolmasters between 1853 and 1891 - W Jackson; W Wrigley; William Henry Tyler (later at Castle Combe); Benjamin Thomas; (W) George Burnett; George Bishop; James Orr; Francis Harris; Francis Mullins; Samuel Stocks; Alfred Carey; Frederick Davies and William Jewell Locke. From 1891 to 1927 the master was Edmund Butler and from 1927 to 1940 Walter James Long. There were of course also many assistant, infants and pupil teachers; the longest serving being Miss Eva Copping who retired in 1947 after 53 years at the school. I would be most grateful for any information (or suggestions for other research!) and will be pleased to provide further details if you have a connection. (I also have access to other information about Charlton Mackrell parish - including the adjacent village of Charlton Adam, which had a separate Infants School from 1865 to 1917.) Celia Mycock
