A document forwarded to me recently with information taken from the first log book of Castle Combe school has revealed that William S. Roberts succeeded my great-grandfather William Henry Tyler as Master of the school. William Tyler was there from October 1868 (despite one published book about the village stating it was 1869) until 15th August 1873, by which time his teaching status had risen several levels to Master 1st class. You can discover more about the history of the school from Trowbridge Records Office, where the school log books are now kept. The original building of 1826 in School Lane, which closed in 1998 when the local children were transferred to a new school in Yatton Keynell, has been converted into three private dwellings.
