    3. Amando is dative = To Amanda (unless, that is, it is a gerundive, also dative = to the loving one : but this seems less likely ) Ultimo die = on the last day [time when = ablative] mensis Octobris = of the month of October [genitive] This could have been written, more elegantly, as Amando qui objit pridie Kal Novembris which is how a Roman would have referred to that day. The year is a bit of a problem, if the transcription is correct and nothing has been worn away over the centuries. Possible VC was an unorthodox way the stonemason had of writing five hundred - which should be D, thus with the millmo (1000) giving a total of 1516 . Alternatively the V should be a D, making 1616. The latter is perhaps more likely. Context would help. > From: [email protected] > Date: Fri, 7 Mar 2003 04:45:11 EST > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: [WSX] DUDLEY > Resent-From: [email protected] > Resent-Date: Fri, 7 Mar 2003 02:45:27 -0700 > > In a message dated 07/03/2003 01:01:00 GMT Standard Time, > [email protected] writes: > > >> Amando qui obiit ultimo die mensis Octobris. >> Anno domini millmo VCXVI. > > something like "Amando who died 10 October , year of our Lord 1516" > > Linda & Tony (who wishes he had paid attention to his latin teacher) > > > ==== WESSEX-PLUS Mailing List ==== > To find a UK mailing lists - try John Fuller's page at: > http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail_country-unk.html > John also includes some useful non-Rootsweb Lists eg Moonrakers etc >
