An item from GENUKI FAMILY HISTORY NEWS No 127: "Thanks to Nick Keeler for spotting the following item in the local Bristol Press - "Public records on microfilm containing millions of personal details have gone missing from Bristol Central Library.Up to 1,400 microfilms that relate to births are missing, as are 1,000 relating to marriages and 1,000 to deaths. One microfilm is said by the library to hold "hundreds" of details. They were discovered to be missing when users at the library began tracing their family history. The library has estimated that it will cost £20,000 to replace the missing microfilm. Almost all the records refer to surnames beginning with "W", and date from 1837 to 1992. Robert Harrison, from Bristol Central Library, would not speculate on why the records may have gone missing Police have launched an investigation."
