    2. Hi all whoever and wherever you are in the world. How about we suggest 2 things to start things going on the lists. 1. We ALL ask for something to be checked on or smashed down in the genealogical sense of course) and each time someone does that that person gets a favour returned for them in the form of a look up or a name and it keeps on going so we all get something out of .......call it santa arriving early! 2. We ALL post a family history story of some sort of our own fact of course we all have at least one. Look forward to seeing you all. Take care,Linda and Tony

    3. Hello All, I have a mystery for you. I have a John North who married Mary Maggs in 1835 in Salisbury, had 4 children in Woodford, then went to work at Heale House between 1842 and 1848. During this time he lived on the property and had 4 more children to a woman named Charlotte! Then went back to his wife and had another 2 children. Children from both women come together in various censuses, but no mention of Charlotte after 1848. I never found out who Charlotte was or whether she took on the 'North' name even though he was already married. The owner of Heale House during this time period was a Rev Samuel Heathcote. If anyone out there knows anything about Rev Heathcote and family, would be interested to know whether he had a daughter named Charlotte. 3. Hi I, too have a mystery for you. My aunt Gladys turned out not to be my aunt as neither of my grandparents were hers although she`d been part of the family since 1905(at least) until she married. I have her birth certificate to show she was born at Upton Court farm, Upton Bishop Hereford to Thomas and Caroline POWELL in 1893. It gets more mysterious as I discovered my grandmother, Agnes ALLAWAY(nee Powell) had had a daughter(also called Agnes) at Ross workhouse before her marriage. The 1901 census shows Agnes (junior) withthe ALLAWAYs at Joys Green, Lydbrook Glos. The family then moved to Monmouthshire and I searched electoral rolls and school registers and found not Agnes but Gladys living with them I have been unable to find any records of Agnes junior apart from her birth certificat although I`ve looked long and hard I`d welcome any suggestions to solve this mystery SylviaFrom: "Karenn Layne" <klayne@webone.com.au> Reply-To: WESSEX-PLUS-L@rootsweb.com To: WESSEX-PLUS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [WSX] list motivation Date: Mon, 28 Nov 2005 18:13:52 +1100 Hello All, I have a mystery for you. 3. Karen I assume that you have discounted the idea that Mary and Charlotte were one and the same person. Have been recently corresponding with someone on the Isle of Wight list and we discovered that in some censuses the wife of the person we were discussing was called Charlotte and in others Maria. Eventually found she was christened Charlotte Maria. I'm not saying these two incidents are related (despite name similarities) but fashions in names change over time, and maybe Mary preferred to be called Charlotte, perhaps it was her middle name and avoided confusion at Heale House. Just a thought. 3. Hi List, Forgot to mention that whilst searching Woodford and Durnford films, I have extracted about 20 pages of parish records. Mainly names that are connected to the North name but still have recorded names like Dear, Allsop, Blowden/Blowdon, Carter, Dyke,Harris, Hayter, Self, Sopp, Stride and Waters. Anyone interested in these names would be happy to send you a copy. Cheers Karenn
