    1. Re stamp family of Ovington
    2. I have been searching for my ancestor James Stamp for a long time, but have now found him in the 1861 census living in Hampstead Middlesex where he was listed as a 77 year old gardener. living at Stamps Cottage, presumably in the grounds of Foley House, Well Walk with his wife Ann .All of James and Ann's children were baptised at St John's Hampstead so they lived there a lot of years. My problem which hopefully SKS can help me with is that he gives his place of birth as Ovington Devon. I am not familiar with that part of our country but a quick search soon revealed that Ovington is in Hampshire. Mmm, does anyone have any ideas as to why James would think he was born in Hampshire? Is it possible that there is some small hamlet called Ovington or in the experience of the listers is some other explanation more likely? There is another slight link with Hampshire in that James and Ann's son, Charles, my great great grandfather had his first child baptised at Hampstead, having married in Hull, Yorks but his second child was baptised in 1847 at Houghton Hampshire. All their subsequent children were baptised in Lincolnshire. Regards Sue
