My great grandmother's sister was called Eliza ELLEN and in 1881 she was living at Old Park (Bartholomew House) Devizes, Wilts. The census gives no clue as to occupation and as she was blind she may not have had one. Does anybody have any idea what this place was? Also, if anyone has the 1871 census for Devizes I would be interested to know if Eliza was at the same address. All the evidence indicates that she was born in 1831 in Andover, Hants but her father was born in Devizes and the family did live there from time to time. The 1881 census suggests that she was born in 1825 but there is no other evidence to support this. Any help on the above would be very welcome. Meg, W. In the 1881 census Eliza ELLEN was actually at a place named St Bartholomew's Home in/on Old Park in Devizes (St John's parish) - the address is now Hartmoor Road, south-west of Devizes town centre. "None" is stated in the occupation column and her age is clearly shown as 56. It appears to have been a private residential home - the head is a matron and there are 2 domestic servants plus five girls aged between 10 and 14 whose occupation is shown as "Industrial", and then Eliza ELLEN unm aged 56, blind. The next enumerated address is Old Park House, a rather grand establishment (now a listed building), so possibly St Bartholomew's Home was a charity supported by the family living there, headed by a Harriette SMITH aged 86, landowner. Eliza ELLEN is not in the 1891 census as her death is registered in Q. March 1888 aged 58 in Devizes (GRO ref. 5a 70.) In 1871 however she was in the (probably) rather less comfortable Union Workhouse, St James, Devizes - unmarried, aged 40, born Andover, Hants, and blind. In 1861 she was unmarried, aged 29, no occupation and blind, living on Pans Lane, Chapelry of St James, Devizes - with her parents Joseph ELLEN 59, a woolstapler, born Devizes, and her mother Ann 56 born Andover, Hants. I thought that maybe her parents had died before 1871, but they were in Bermondsey, Southwark - Joseph aged 69, woolstapler born Devizes and Ann(but looks like Ada?) 56 born Andover. Also in 1881 Joseph is a lodger at 6 Whitelocks Court St Mary's Devizes, a widower aged 80, woolstapler, born Devizes. His death was in Q. June 1887 aged 87 in Devizes (GRO ref.5a 56) - from www.freebmd.org.uk - and there is also a death registration for an Ann ELLEN aged 71, in Camberwell Q. March 1876 (ref.1d 493). You may have had some of this information before, but hope this helps a bit. Hi Celia, Thank you so much for this information. I did have some of it, particularly during their period in London but is very helpful to have some feel for where Eliza was at each census. I now have the death certs of all three (Joseph, Ann and Eliza) and you are right in all your comments. I have never been able to pin down Joseph's parents. Do you know if there are any local records for the period he was born (1800ish)?
