    3. Hi List I am researching the Pither name. Pether is a common variant. I know that there were Pithers in the Petherton Hundred in Somerset in the 16th C. and I was wondering if any local historians knows of a way of ascertaining whether the the place may be an origin of the name or vice versa. I think the Petherton place name goes back to Saxon times. Any help or ideas would be appreciated. Regards, Terry

    3. The "pether" part of the name apparently comes from the river Parrot although how Sudperetone or Norpereton become North or South Petherton I am not sure. 3. Harry, Thanks for the info. I was afraid of something like that. I suppose that it is still possible that the name originates from the place - tho this would seem a bit of a long shot.
