I am trying to trace a JOHN EDWARD NORKETT spelling could be one of the above variations. There was a story in the family that my ancestors got the name off the side of a bakery van. The more I research the more I believe that anything is possible. That is why I am now looking for the above Great grandfather and his sons, one of which is my grandfather. He was ALFRED JAMES NORCOT(T) and his younger brother was ARTHUR HENRY NORCOT(T). The mother of these was MARY ANN NORCOT (baptism record used only one 'T') her parents were GEORGE NORCOTT (2 T's) who married ELIZA HOLLAND (a widow nee CREIG(?)) I have plenty of information about Arthur and his mother Mary Ann but cannot find any records for :- 1) ARTHUR JAMES NORCOT(T) ....birth or baptism records. I have an approx. birth date which is 18/3/1887. This however does not tie up with his marriage cert.:- On the 1/3/1911 he ALFRED JAMES NORKETT (note spelling) was recorded as 30 years old, bachelor, occupation: patient attendent, resident at : Brookwood Asylum, Knaphill, Woking, Surrey, his father was recorded as JOHN EDWARD NORKETT (same spelling) occupation : painter. Alfreds wife was CLARA CUMMINGS (my grandmother) born SPENNYMOOR, Co DURHAM she was also 30 y/o birth date approx. 17/5/1886 (neither of their birthdates appear to be correct.) 2) I cannot find a marriage record for JOHN EDWARD NORKETT and MARY ANN NORCOTT. Mary Ann is the right person for my great grandmother. The sons Alfred and Arthur left home as soon as they could after their mother Mary Ann married a man by the name of EDWARD HEATH whom they didn't like. Marriage took place 17 August 1884. That shows that both boys were born before the marriage. So where is the elusive John that appears as father on marriage cert. of Alfred and Clara? 3) When Mary Ann witnessed her older sister CHARLOTTEs marriage, she signed her name as MARY ANN NORKETT in the register. Can anyone help me untangle this combination of surnames in this mixture of spellings in the same family? susan.norkett@tesco.net based in Bournemouth Dorset
