William White Sherren was a travelling minister who I found out died on the 5th of June 1896 and buried in Sunningdale cemetery in Berkshire County. However, when I researched his burial, I was told that He was not buried there. Where do I look for the correct information? > >Derk Sherren in Canada Hi Derk Not quite sure what you mean by cemetery, especially in view of the way it is sometimes used in North America compared with its usage in the UK. In the UK, as many church graveyards were running out of space government legislation was introduced allowing burials from the mid 1850s onwards to take place in the public cemeteries run by the local authority or other licenced body, although many were still performed in the church graveyard, if there was room. This cemetery may be many miles from the parish in which the deceased lived and may well be in the nearest town eg Windsor? I'm not aware of the situation regarding Sunningdale and would have thought that, unless someone on the list has personal knowledge of the this area, you might receive a more knowledgeable answer on the possible options available for Sunningdale on the Berkshire List? The subscribe address is: BERKSHIRE-L-request@rootsweb.com Alternatively, perhaps his body was removed from Sunningdale and taken to a different part of the country for burial, especially if there was a family plot somewhere else? Although fairly rare in those days it is not unheard of, especially as the railways covered most of the populated parts of the country by this time. Perhaps a check in the parish of his birth should also be on your agenda? Further thought: you don't say whether you ggrf was a minister of the Church of England or a non-conformist: if the latter that may open other options if one of the chapels at which he preached had a burial ground: by this I mean that many didn't, but some did!
