Judy asked: >Browsing through the Amazon site for maps of Dorset (www.amazon.co.uk) I came across 3 lots of Ordnance Survey maps. I am familiar with the Landranger and Explorer series - but what is the Aqua series?< The Aqua series appeared on BBC TV News last night, in sad circumstances. They are O.S maps laminated to make them waterproof, for ramblers and other people who go out in the rain. The sad aspect is that the sales have fallen dramatically because of the Foot & Moth epidemic, so the firm producing them is having to lay off staff. I think maps are very relevant to genealogy. I have always been keen on programs like Genmap UK and BIRDIE which provide mapping of IGI data. The National Burial Index to be released in April incorporates a map of England & Wales, showing the locations and coverage. I reckon the Phillimore Atlas and Index of Parish Registers is the book I use most often. At present I am using this, Lewis's 1835 Topographical Dictionary, and http://www.streetmap.co.uk/ to find the grid reference and postcode of each Wiltshire parish, so I can add Multimaps to each parish page of GENUKI for Wiltshire. regards, David Hawgood.
