G'day Have bought second a small volume "Letters of an Australian Pioneer Family 1827-1880" published in 1984 by the Association of the BUCKNALL family of VIC [ISBN 0 9590680 0 7] It contains transcripts of letters between 3 generations of an extended GLS family which began leaving the Stroud district of GLS in 1839: William PRICE ( b 1783 son of Stephen PRICE & Sarah MATTHEWS) and his wife Ann (b 1798 dau of Leonard PEGLER & Elizabeth BAYLEY) arrived Sydney NSW 1839 "Argyle" as Bounty Immigrants with their 8 chn Jane PRICE sister of William married John TUCKER; their dau Sarah TUCKER bc1807 married Edward Gittins BUCKNALL ( b 1797 son of Samuel BUCKNALL and Ann CLISSOLD); they arrived Port Phillip VIC 1843 "Lord Keane" with 6 chn; 2 more were born VIC. The property they selected in VIC to farm they called Rodborough Vale. Ann Mary (Mary Ann) TUCKER bc1824, sister to the above, came with them on the voyage; she fell in love with a Richard SUTTON, a fellow passenger, described as a "son of one of the county families near Stroud"; they married later in VIC. Stephen Price TUCKER bc1805 brother of above, arrived in VIC 1859 per "Sussex"; he had apparently originally gone to Wisconsin USA. Eliza TUCKER sister of above bc1825 arrived in VIC 1856 per "Morning Star" supposedly accompanying her sister Sarah BUCKNALL after the latter had taken her 3 younger sons to be schooled at Rhode House Rodborough. While there the 3 BUCKNALL boys lived with their Aunt & uncle, the Edwin BUCKNALLs of Rodborough. Edwin BUCKNALL, son of Edwin above, bc1825, arrived VIC 1857 per "Guy Mannering" with his wife Ellen nee WAKEFIELD, and their 2 sons Hugh & Charles; 4 more chn reg VIC. Frank BUCKNALL son of Edwin above, bc1831, arrived VIC 1852 "Prince Albert" Robert BUCKNALL son of Edwin above, bc1835, arrived VIC c1854 Edward Gittins BUCKNALL brought with him 2 workers Jessie TELLING bc1824 Stroud, carpenter and Samuel MARTIN bc1822 Stroud, labourer, with his wife Harriet nee TIPTON b 1816 Newent. The letters are a gold mine for direct family; they describe conditions in both VIC and GLS, and follows family members to QLD and Natal in South Africa. Unfortunately the book is not indexed, but if anyone has a particular interest I could attempt to check for a name or event. Of interest to me was the motivation of Edward Gittins BUCKNALL, a prosperous businessman, in migrating to the undeveloped colony of VIC. He makes it clear that his motivation was the welfare of his chn; his eldest sons were opposed to any business other than farming, and farming in England was unprofitable. Prospects for the young were very gloomy, trade was declining and there was little hope for improvement. Edward Gittins had been a very successful jeweller in Stroud; he is believed to have taken £2,000 in gold and jewellery with him to VIC to set up his 'county estate'.
