    3. >Aaron Wilton asked about Wilton Castle and the river Wylye. >Wilton House(a bit like a castle)is the home of Lord Pembroke.The17th earl >of Pembroke. >It is built on the site of The ancient Wilton Abbey 3 miles from >Salisbury, Wiltshire. >The river Wylye runs through the estate, >Check it out and see pictures at www.wiltonhouse.com >Jenny Gape. Salisbury. Wiltshire. Hi, My greatgrandmother Rosina Maria DYKE lived in Wilton and her HALLETT children were baptised there but when I checked birthplaces I found the children were born at Wardour near Tisbury which is 11 miles distant. My greatgrandfather was a butcher on the estate at Wardour House which has Old Wardour Castle. This is a "real" castle and was used to film "Robin Hood Prince of Thieves". Could this be the castle Aaron's ancestors referred to? 3. To add a little to Geoff's message about Wardour: There is a chapel at Wardour Castle (it is in the 'new' Castle built in the 1780s). The old castle (where Robin Hood Prince of Thieves was filmed) was destroyed in the Civil War and is now owned by English Heritage and open to the public. The 'new' castle (a large house really) is now in private hands. The Chapel of All Saints Wardour is Catholic and you will find that it was used by the workers on the Arundell Estate at Wardour which had the largest Catholic community outside of London in 18th and 19th centuries. The All Saints records are on film at the Wiltshire Record Office and there is a copy at the SoG. I don't think the LDS were given permission to film them. If you have lost ancestors in this part of Wiltshire it is well to remember Wardour. People may well have moved from the Arundell estate to other large estates in the vicinity. Many (inlcuding my own ancestors) only remained catholic whilst in the employ of the Arundells. Wardour is not on the Wylie - it is close to the Nadder . Wilton is a house rather than a Castle. It was originally built and owned by the HERBERT family. It is situated in the town of Wilton. The surname Wilton is location - coming from places of that name in Wiltshire, Cumbria, Herefordshire, Norfolk, Somerset and East and West Yorkshire. People usually gained locational surnames after they had moved away from a place as a means of distinguishing themselves back in the middle ages - 12th-14th centuries when surnames formed. Thus John from Wilton who moved to Salisbury would become John de Wiltone to distinguish him from John the short, John the Baker, John who lived by the hill etc. Helen Helen Jones in Weymouth, Dorset, UK List Admin Dorset-L Scammell-L hsj@melcombe.freeserve.co.uk http://www.melcombe.freeserve.co.uk/ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Geoff Hallett" <hallett@king.igs.net> To: <WESSEX-PLUS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, March 09, 2001 1:54 PM Subject: [WSX] Is Wilton Castle at Wardour? > >
