I have recently received a copy of my mother in law's death certificate, and although I have looked at a couple of web sites I cannot find anything like the cause of death given. The cause of death is given as "Linitis Plastica". Does anyone have any idea what this means. We understood at the time (1982) she died of cancer, possibly of the stomach. Many thanks for help. If you put "Linitis Plastica" into Google.com search engine you should find some vivid pictures taken using Endoscopy and such comments as "This type of carcinoma has a very poor prognosis." etc... Linitus Plastica (leather bottle stomach) n : carcinoma of the stomach characterized by thickening and diffuse infiltration of the wall rather than localization of the tumor in a discrete lump . OR diffuse infiltration of the stomach submucosa with malignant tissue, producing rigidity and narrowing. Diagnosis by endoscopy may be difficult but radiological changes are more marked. Hi Mary, linitis: inflammation of gastric cellular tissue linitis plastica: diffuse fibrous proliferation of the submucous connective tissue of the stomach, resulting in thickening and fibrosis so that the organ is constricted, inelastic, and rigid (like a leather bottle). Called also leather bottle stomach. From: Encyclopaedia and Dictionary of Medicine, Nursing, and Allied Health, second edition ISBN 0-7216-6357-5 Hope that is some help, Jenny (Wyong, NSW, Australia). ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mary Haskell" <mary-haskell@beeb.net> To: <WESSEX-PLUS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, March 23, 2001 8:35 AM Subject: [WSX] Current medical terminology | I have recently received a copy of my mother in law's death certificate, and although I have looked at a couple of web sites I cannot find anything like the cause of death given. Mary, Did a quick search of the internet and found the following definition of Linitis Plastica (at http://www.echt.chm.msu.edu/courseware/blockII/Pathology/GI-Stomach_39.html) - it is "a highly infiltrative type of gastric carcinoma". In other words, a very nasty type of cancer of the stomach. There is more detail on what it is like at that site. ----- Original Message ----- From: Mary Haskell <mary-haskell@beeb.net> To: <WESSEX-PLUS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, 23 March 2001 8:35 AM Subject: [WSX] Current medical terminology > I have recently received a copy of my mother in law's death certificate, and although I have looked at a couple of web sites I cannot find anything like the cause of death given.
