Hello List: I am looking for information on my 3g-grandfather Daniel NEATE. His son Henry Daniel NEATE was born Westbury, Wilts abt 1822 according to census information but search of Westbury PR (and Westbury nonconformist registers at FRC) has failed to find a baptism record. Henry Daniel NEATE (by then living in Kensington, Middx) married Anna WHITE 1849 at Winterbourne Dantsey, Wilts and it is from that marriage certificate that I have got the occupation of his father Daniel NEATE. >From relationships of visitors stated in census data I know that the following were related to my NEATE line: Matilda Nelson NEATE (married name) born Salisbury, Wilts abt 1779 Julia NEATE (unmarried as at 1881) born Westbury, Wilts abt 1850 John NEATE, shoe-maker, born Market Lavington, Wilts abt 1820 Matilda NEATE (married name REA) born Malmesbury. Wilts abt 1825 Does anyone have any of the above people in their tree? Hi Derek I wonder if this is one of those cases many of us have experienced in real life when someone asks the same sort of question! The census enumerator asks Henry "Where were you born"? Henry replies - with a suitably strong Wiltshire accent "Upton Scudamore" or wherever as appropriate! Say it quickly to get the suitable effect on the enumerator! Westbury Leigh and Chapmanslade are maybe other good ones? To which the enumerator has replied "Where's that"? wondering how its spelt and getting his mental phonetic alphabet ready :-) "Near Westbury" replies Henry "Oh, I know where that is!" replies enumerator, with relief, and thinks to himself, I know how to spell it too, and enters Westbury! So perhaps the event may have been recorded in one of the PRs around Westbury "or" in the home parish of his mother if she went home to have Henry, which, of course, he might not be aware of! On the other hand the baptists were fairly popular in that part of Wiltshire at that time and there are numerous baptist chapels in the area: the difficult thing with them is that baptism wouldn't take place until the person concerned was of an age to make a decision regarding his faith, as confirmation is supposed to be, in the CofE! The other problem can be tracking down their Registers! There maybe birth registers, but often few and far between and I have a feeling there may are also be a few sunday school registers around? There's one on-line for Penknap, but regret no Neates present! http://dilton-marsh.port5.com/research/prov_ssreg.html So in summary I should be inclined to have a search of the PRs in the area around Westbury. There is a useful little program called Parish Locator which you can download from: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/parloc/parishlocator.exe which will allow you to select parishes within a given radius of Westbury. If you should bump into my ggf John RAINES b c 1852 in the area let me know - I've got the same problem :-) Paul Portland On Tue, 13 Mar 2001 12:20:03 EST, you wrote: >Hello List: > >I am looking for information on my 3g-grandfather Daniel NEATE. > >>From relationships of visitors stated in census data I know that the following were related to my NEATE line: > >Matilda Nelson NEATE (married name) born Salisbury, Wilts abt 1779 >Julia NEATE (unmarried as at 1881) born Westbury, Wilts abt 1850 >John NEATE, shoe-maker, born Market Lavington, Wilts abt 1820 >Matilda NEATE (married name REA) born Malmesbury.
