    3. Somerset had a thriving coal mining industry. They even built the Somerset Coal Canal , which was a 17.75 mile, 23 lock, narrow canal from Paulton to Limpley Stoke where it joins the Kennet & Avon Canal. A lot of coal was also mined in the Bristol area until after WW2. And Bath is almost totally undermined by Bath stone workings. All in all, although I do not have the specific data, there were a good few miners in Somerset.
