    1. [WSX] ROYAL - QUEENS 'Pardon'
    2. The surname of my maternal great grandfather was BREWER[dob circa 1858] from Bath, Somerset. I have the original of a document which, to my lay eye appears to be a 'Royal' or 'Queens Pardon'. It is addressed to: K. Bartrum Esquire, [?solicitor?] 6 Northumberland Buildings, Bath. It reads, Whitehall. 13th. February 1873. 19755. "Sir. The Secretary of State for the Home Department having considered your application in behalf of GEORGE BREWER. I have the satisfaction to acquaint you that he has felt warranted under all the circumstances in advising Her Majesty to remit the remainder of the prisoner's sentence. I am Sir, Your obedient Servant, etc.,etc.." On the one hand I have no idea what offence my ancestor had committed, and on the other, family rumour hints that the pardon was granted because George Brewer had subsequently heroically saved a person from drowning. I have a photograph of an adolescent looking George wearing what appears to be a 'reform training-ship' type of pseudo naval uniform. Does any 'listee' have suggestions where I might trace the nature of the offence and the subsequent events which led to the 'pardon'? Annoyingly my failing memory hampers my ability to recall the name of the well known albeit antiquated Reformatory School which served the Bristol/North Somerset area until about 15 years ago. If George served his sentence at this place, has any 'listee' knowledge of where the records are deposited? Alec Palmer. Weymouth. Dorset. xx. ii. mmi.
