G'day This is one of the wills I had success with from the GLS R O site http://www.gloscc.gov.uk/pubserv/gcc/corpserv/archives/genealogy.htm (please note I have included the site this time!) The will of Samuel GAZZARD of Dunkirk Minchinhampton who died 1843. Basically he leaves things in trust for his wife Mary during her life time and then everything to be sold and divided evenly between son John GAZARD (mason), son Samuel GAZARD, sons in law John GARDNER and Nathaniel HILLIER and grandson Charles NICHOLLS. Died the day after he made the will 10 Feb 1843 - made a cross (because of illness?) Witnessed by Isaac WAKEFIELD and Isaac CHANDLER who could both write (after a fashion). I tried to put together the family that was on the 1851 census from this; started with Nathaniel HILLIER as he was easiest Minchinhampton 1851 census SECTION V All that part of the Parish of Minchinhampton called Theescombe Division lying to the South of the Road from Hampton Common to Little Britain and to the West or Lower side of the Road from Littleworth to Nailsworth passing Dunkirk House, including the Old Lodge, Theescombe, Little Brittain, Dyehouse, Mills-Culver House, Dunkirk Mills. His wife is dead (and may have been dead in 1843 which is why the share went to son-in-law rather than daughter.) [NB I have a researcher's note that Susanna HILLIER may have died 1847]. With my version of the 1851 census index (although not really suited to such a task) it does not appear to me that there are John and Mary GARDNER however spelled who are old enough living together in 1851, at least not in Minch or any of the obvious surrounding parishes or in Painswick. There are only 2 bapts for John and Mary GARDNER in Painswick on the IGI . Mary Anne GARDNER - International Genealogical Index Gender: F Christening: 18 May 1817 Painswick, Gloucester, England 2. George GARDNER - International Genealogical Index Gender: M Christening: 15 Oct 1826 Painswick, Gloucester, England This could be the son living at Painswick 1851 150 JONES Thomas Widr 64 Labourer Painswick Ann 35 Cranham Emily 13 Scholar Painswick GARDNER George Lodger 24 Lab Bisley Anyway, I wonder again if Mary GARDNER was dead by 1843 (which is why she is not mentioned by name) and if John has died by 1851 - but as I said VERY common names, especially around Painswick. Grandson Charles NICHOLLS; well if you assume that he didn’t go to NSW (with the rest of his family - George and Hannah NICHOLLS, sibs Eliza, Elizabeth, Isaiah, Ellen in 1839) because he had better things to do Charles NICHOLLS Sex: M Marriage(s): Spouse: Deborah ALDER Marriage: 28 Jul 1839 Horsley, Gloucester, England ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Source Information: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Batch number: Dates Source Call No. Type Printout Call No. Type M018101 1733-1754 0425442, 0019528 Film 6911586 Film M018101 1754-1881 0091529 Film NONE Sheet: That made me look closely at this entry Horsley 1851 census 59 ALDER Samuel 75 Shearer King Stanley Fanny 74 Lime Carrier King Stanley Susannah 22 Lime Carrier Horsley Robert Grandson 20 Cloth Worker Horsley NICHOLLS Charles Grandson 3 Cheltenham and then find the family Cheltenham 18 1851 census 74 NICHOLLS Deborah 30 Monthly Nurse Horsley George 1 Cheltenham SIMS John nurse child 9m Cheltenham No sign of Charles although it does not say whether Deborah is widowed or married. If anyone is interested in this family I can put them in touch with Peter Proctor of ACT Australia who is an eminent GAZARD researcher and a descendant of this family. Samuel GAZARD's wife is regarded as being nee SMITH. My own connection to this line is somewhat dubious; I descend from Susannah GAZARD bc1780 who was living Minchinhampton when she married William JEFFRIES Horsley 8 Apr 1805. The relationship is unknown, but as the family witnessed each other's marriages, and JEFFRIES chn sailed on the boat to NSW in 1841 as other GAZZARD descendants, some relationship is assumed. Because truth is stranger than fiction I received an enquiry today for my index of GLS born people who arrived Australia pre 1888 for Mary Ann HILLIER dau of Nathaniel, who married George GLASTONBURY (GLASSENBURY - father Philip, another Horsley bloke) in South Australia in 1858. Mary Ann is the dau aged 20 on the 1851 census; her brother Nathaniel aged 17 also came to South Australia and married Hannah RICKARDS (father Daniel another Minch lady) there in 1866.
