Alf, Essential reading: "My Ancestor was a Merchant Seaman" by Chris & Michael WATTS. There are masses of information at the PRO, but you will need this book to be able to make use of it. There is also "Lloyds Captains Register" published 1869. I have copy on fiche and there is no William CARD. There are other CARDs.
