We might be able to save you a postage stamp! Not a lot of point in writing to Kew for records - they do no research - period. They will merely send you a list of recommended researchers on their list - sorry independent researchers - suggest you have a look at: http://www.pro.gov.uk/research/irlist/default.htm and you can download a selection of addresses suitable for the area of research you require, some of whom have e-mail addresses :-)) Regards Paul Portland http://members.netscapeonline.co.uk/pbtyc/Index_Links/index.htm
Hello there, As Paul says Kew do not do searches. I can provide the name of a private researcher whose services I have used if anybody wants to know. The researcher in question researched my g-grandfather's army records for me. He charged about £15 per hour and the whole lot, including several photocopies, cost me not much more than £30 about 18 months ago. He said that it wouldn't have takenn him so long but the records weren't in the right place so he searched amongst adjacent records and eventually came across them tucked inside another person's papers. Hello Listers I recently posted a request on the Aus-Convicts list seeking some information about the hulk LEVIATHAN. A couple of books were suggested to me but they are not in our local library and do not appear to be in the Qld. State Library either. I'll have to try some Aus. bookshops to see if I can purchase them. I found a small amount of information with google and I'm wondering if anyone on the list is familiar with Portsmouth and could tell me whether or not any kind of a photo of the Leviathan is available. My convict was tried at the Old Bailey in 1826 and I was also wondering how the convicts travelled from London to Portsmouth. Would they have walked or would they have been transported in carts of some kind? Regards Val (near Bundaberg, Qld., Oz.)
