Can anyone tell me what the military force it is for 2nd Dorset Regisment? He was a Lance Corporal; and stationed at Depot Barracks? Dorchester when he got married. Would he have served in the Boer War??? His name was George James Barnes. I am wondering where I can get his military records, and anything else pertinent. He was my great grandad. He was 23 when he married and died at 30years of age. I would appreciate any help Heather NE BC Canada
Military reforms in 1881 resulted in the 54th Regiment of Foot becoming the 2nd Dorsetshire Regiment. In 1958 the amalgamation of the Devonshire and Dorset Regiments formed the present "Devonshire & Dorset Regiment". There is now a fine regimental museum in what was the gateway to the former barracks in Dorchester. The Regiment did fight in the Boer War. However, the best source for records of individual soldiers is the Public Record Office at Kew. You can download information leaflets on many subjects, including military service records, from their web site www.pro.gov.org Address of the Museum : The Keep Military Museum, Bridport Road, Dorchester, Dorset DT1 1RN (very close to the Dorset Record Office). I have been told their web site is www.keepmuseum.org but it did not work when I just tried it !
