Sorry, Kay, I should have looked at my huge Besant family list before writing. We have two Sarahs, my gr.gr. grandmother born in 1832. She married George Rothwell. The other Sarah was born in 1830. It doesn't mention a marriage and she died in 1900 in Southsea, Hampshire. Not close enough I guess. Sorry. I have several young ancestors like your James, who took jobs where they could get them; some in nearby villages. At this age they usually started as ploughboys and lodged with the senior farm worker they would be working under. From accounts within my own family this was a two edged sword - on the one hand it relieved pressure on a small cottage bursting at the seams with a growing family. On the other, it did not bring in a much needed wage; as lodgings had to be paid for by the youngster. Hi List, Happy New Year & good luck with all your research. I hope that in 2005 we will all be able to break through at least one - of our ancestors brick walls!! My 3x Great-Grandfather was Robert LARCOMBE b. 1810c Somerset? He arrived as a Convict to Australia onboard the JOHN BARRY in 1839. His partner in crime was a John FOWLER and they were tried at the Wiltshire Assizes in 1838. It's said in his convict record that he was a Stone Mason Apprentice of 2½ years. If anyone is researching LARCOMBE or has them in their tree - I would be happy to hear from you... Happy Hunting! Christine

The name PRICTOE appears in vol. no. 2. Do you have all of these? Moya ----- Original Message ----- From: "Paul Eggleton" To: Sent: Sunday, January 23, 2005 1:06 AM Subject: [WSX] Pric(k)toe I am researching this rare name, which I have found only in the NW Hants, South Berks and East Wilts area. The towns involved are very close. I am trying to go further back and also into the 20th. century to get to living relatives of this name. Please forgive me if you are on more than one of these lists, as you will get duplicate mail. My gg g/m was Jane PRICKTOE born 1836 Knights Enham, Hants. Her parents were Richard (a blacksmith) born 1799 Andover and Jane HURST b 1803 Knights Enham. Richard's parents were John, born abt. 1761 (he died Mar 24, 1835 in Andover aged 74) and Sarah SKEAT. Going further back. There was a John born in Andover to William and Ann (nee RUMBOLD) ch. Nov 9, 1759, which is very close in date terms. However, there is another John ch. June 18, 1760 in Urchfont, Wilts to John and Mary. If anyone has any details on either of these two which may confirm or rule them out I would be most appreciative. Going further on. There are a few lines coming down from John and Sarah, which I can't conclude. John and Sarah had two sons that I can't account for - John b 1795 and Wm 1797 both in Andover. Richard was married first to Hannah HILLIER and they had a son Wm b. 1830 Knights Enham - I have him in the 1851 census but not afterward. Jane had two brothers that I can't trace. James born 1838 Upper Clatford - he is on the 1851 census. Simon 1845 b. Dummer - I can't trace him at all. On other lines I have the children of David b. 1838 Woodhouse and Elizabeth (can't find marriage). All the children were born in Andover and this is as far as I have Albert b 1860 - nothing else Martha b 1863 - I have her in the 1881 census David b 1865 - I have him in the 1881 census Mary Ann b 1867 and Ellen 1873 nothing else Wm b 1870 m. Georgiana Levy in 1893 in Hungerford (which is both Berkshire and Hampshire I believe. I have traced a dau Ivy M born 1912 Newbury Fred b 1874 m. Bessie Wiggins 1903 in Hungerford. I have traced a dau Elizabeth M 1911. For some reason obviously Wm and Fred moved to Hungerford (maybe the whole family did). There are several PRIC(K)TOEs born in Hungerford district in the early 1900's. I don't know which line they are or even if this happened in Hungerford or a suburb of. Finally I have John b. 1805 Andover who m. Eliza NORMAN (he died in Basingstoke 1873). John himself died somewhere between 1851 and 1873. They had 4 children that I have traced all b. Basingstoke. Eliza 1832 - nothing else Mary Ann 1834 and Eliza 1838 I have in the 1851 census nothing afterwards John b. 1836 died 1837 A bit of a long email - sorry - would appreciate any help on this. Hi listers and colleagues The New Year is really with us on Sunday 30 January 2005 when the annual Bracknell Family History Fair takes place. Traditionally, this event sees the commencement of the year's family history calendar, and is the largest Sunday family history fair held in the UK, with some two-hundred or so stalls in attendance. I'm delighted to report that the Oxfordshire FHS will have it's usual stall at this Fair, when Wendy Archer and Marc Hiles will be selling our CDs, microfiche and some items from our bookstall. In addition, they will have our "Search Suite" available on computer, featuring an array of Oxfordshire and North Berkshire indexes to censuses, baptism registers, marriage registers, burial registers and monumental inscriptions. Those researchers wishing to plan their visit to our stall in advance can view our resources on the following webpages :- CD sales ; http://www.ofhs.org.uk/CDsales.html microfiche sales ; http://www.ofhs.org.uk/mfiche.html bookstall ; http://www.ofhs.org.uk/books.html Search Services ; http://searches.oxfordshirefhs.org.uk/ The Bracknell Family History Fair takes place on Sunday 30 January 2005 at Bracknell Sports and Leisure Centre, Bagshot Road (A322), Bracknell, Berkshire RG12 9SE. The doors open at 10.00am. Further details about the Fair itself from : http://members.aol.com/aquarterma/familyhistoryfairs.html Finally, on a different note, sports fans might recall that the Bracknell Sports and Leisure Centre hit the news in 1976 when it was the location for the European Final of the TV series "Superstars". During the cycling event on the cinder running track, the then England football captain Kevin Keegan fell off his bike during a race against Dutch footballer Rudi Kroll. Despite suffering severe skin cuts on his knees, Keegan continued in the event and qualified for the final. His courage was rewarded when he won the final steeplechase event to win the overall event. Has anyone any interest in the surname FAY particularly in the parishes of Enford, Devizes, Collingbourne Ducis and Kingston. Have been researching them for many years and I would be pleased to make contact with any fellow researchers. Dick Law
