    3. There is a very good free musuem of the Martyrs at Tolpuddle and the third weekend of each July a rally of the unions is held there in honour of them. Would be interested to hear from anyone connected to the Hammett line of one of the 6. 3. Briantspuddle/Bryantspuddle Dorset is east of Dorchester, and can come under Affpuddle transcripts. 1600's is quite early, and would probably be in latin, and Smith/Smyth is quite a common name. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Samess5@aol.com> To: <WESSEX-PLUS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 01, 2005 7:20 PM Subject: Re: [WSX] Pearce - Briantspuddle, Dorset > Have been looking for a Brianspittle in DorsetEngland .Could this be the > same place? 3. Yes, this would be the same place. It is a small village. Very pretty. Other villages nearby are Tolpuddle and Affpuddle. Tolpuddle is famous for the Tolpuddle Martyrs. Look on OPC Briantspuddle you will probably find a lot of information there. If you are not sure what OPC means, it stands for Online Parish Clerk. 1. Next week's Oxfordshire FHS meeting
    2. Colleagues The next meeting of the Oxfordshire Family History Society will be held on Monday 7 February 2004 in the small hall at the Exeter Hall, Oxford Road, Kidlington, Oxford OX5 1AB. This will be a computer meeting, with the doors opening at 7.15pm in anticipation of a presentation commencing at 7.30pm prompt. The evening will be hosted by the Alan Simpson, a member of the society's Computer Group Panel, who will be talking about "What you can't see through YOUR Windows". The demonstration will encompass a portfolio of hints and handy tips for users of Microsoft Windows, and hence will probably appeal to computer beginners. However, because this presentation will be partly audience-driven, it will have something for everyone. Why not come along and ask a question ? I'm sure that Alan won't claim to know every answer, but either someone in the audience will be able to help, or he'll know where to look to solve the problem. All members, potential members and their guests are welcome. For directions to get to the Exeter Hall, please see the map linked to the society's website at :- http://www.ofhs.org.uk/ExeterHall.html For a list of future meetings of the society, please see :- http://www.ofhs.org.uk/meetings.html Finally, there's the possibility that Alan might put a few notes of the presentation onto the society's website in the days following the meeting. I can't promise whether he will or not, but checking this link in about a fortnight's time might be worthwhile :- http://www.ofhs.org.uk/met.html That link also provides details of other past meetings where online write-ups exist. Any queries, please contact me off-list. Paul Gaskell Minutes Secretary and Publicity Officer Oxfordshire Family History Society Web : www.ofhs.org.uk E-mail : publicity@ofhs.org.uk

    1. John GIBBON of Dorchester : William Gibbon of Holcomb Rogus
    2. Christine Gibbins
    3. Good day to you all, In the church at Christow in Devon is a memorial erected by one Thomas GIBBON to his wife Elizabeth who died in 1660. On the memorial is a coat of arms, the blazon I think would read like this: sable, a lion rampant, guardant, ducally crowned, or, between three escallops, ar. Crest. a lion rampant, guardant, ducally crowned, or, holding betw. his paws an escallop, ar. According to the Alumni Oxonienses, Thomas was son of William Gibbon, of Holcomb Rogus, Devon, born 1616. Thomas went to be a MP for Exeter. I am trying to find out more about the family and the coat of arms. I am thinking that may be William is a relative to John of Dorchester. I have discovered that John GIBBON Esq. of Dorchester was granted the same arms, so I am trying to find out more about John. The arms were granted by Sir William Segar, Garter King. Segar died in 1633. I am doing a study of the name Gibbons and it's variations in Devon before 1760, so will be very happy to share my notes with anyone interested in the name. Thank you for reading this. Best wishes, Chris. Gibbins

    3. Hi Sally, I found her very easily - that's the good news - the bad news is she was by then a servant in soneonee else's house. She is listed as PEARCE aged 18 born Briantspuddle. She is living in Tolpuddle as a Dairyman's assistant in the household of John and Mary CROCKER. There was a James CROCKER also who was 24 - perhaps a candidate for the illegitimacy.
