Thanks very much David, This is definitely the right family, as other names have been confirmed by my Aunt. Could you suggest where would be the best place to look for their wedding ? What is the parish church in Bicknoller, or where were her parents living when she married ? Tim, Minehead parish registers are on line to early 1901 as also are Dunster's. Can't really help you that much except I do have the censuses for the Carhampton hundred, so could do a look up for 1891 if that is of any help. I also have a copy of T.L. Stoate's transcription of Carhampton parish registers to 1837. Williams families appeared to be quite numerous in that parish, while there is only a handful in Minehead and they were probably a spill over anyway. I have an interest in Williams of Minehead as my great aunt Sarah Stacey Parsons married a widower Robert Williams in 1910. He was a carpenter. He married a Georgina X c 1885, and they baptized children in Minehead between 1886 and 1891. Hubert rang a bell, as Sarah Stacey's brother also died in WW1, but unfortunately there any similarity appears to end. Anyway, do let me know if I can assist you. Rosemary Connecticut
Colleagues The next meeting of the Oxfordshire Family History Society will be held on Monday 28 February 2005 at Exeter Hall, Oxford Road, Kidlington, Oxford OX5 1AB. Doors open at 7.15 pm for coffee, help with both genealogy and computers, bookstall, library and exchange journals. The subject of the talk at 8.00pm is "Access to Archives - A2A" by Sarah Stark. The speaker is a member of staff at The National Archives, and will be demonstrating the A2A database, which contains catalogues describing archives held throughout England. The A2A database is updated regularly, and currently contains 7.3 million catalogue entries from 381 record offices and other repositories. How many of *your* ancestors will be detailed within these records ? I'm fortunate in that I've seen this splendid lecture previously. It will be well worth attending, and to get the most from it, I would suggest that the website holding the database is looked at before the meeting. It is at :- http://www.a2a.org.uk/ Although it is tempting to search for your ancestors immediately, this is a large and complex database. You'll have more chance of finding them if you click on the link entitled "New A2A Users" and read the helppages contained therein first ! All members, potential members and their guests are welcome. For directions to get to the Exeter Hall, please see :- http://www.ofhs.org.uk/ExeterHall.html For a list of future meetings of OFHS, please see :- http://www.ofhs.org.uk/meetings.html Any queries, please contact me off-list. Dear All, As a result of the resounding success of another specialised list I belong to, I am thinking of copying the model. Let me explain. There is a list for Eng-Glo-Hawkesbury, which has brought together a large number of people with interests in a relatively small locality. There are strong links between families in that small corner of SE Glos and NW Wiltshire, and I'm one with a family spreading across the borders - in particular in my case villages like Biddestone and North Wraxall. I was wondering if anyone with interests in this area would like to try and emulate the Hawkesbury success with a similar list for the area - either a "biddestone-Wilts" list or a "North-West-Wilts" list. If you are interested reply to me ( perhaps with a suggestion for the scope of the list as well) and I'll gauge interest and act accordingly! Thanks Marilyn
Hi Maurice, 1841 census for Pewsey address: Painsbridge, shows a Charles Amor aged 14 Ag Lab in the household of Jane Hibbard 34 (sorry didn't write down any further details because he wasn't one of mine - and of course details are sparse in 1841 census - but his age fits yours). also have him in the 1851 census shown as a Baker with Mary Ann and one child and also in the 1871 census in High Street shown as a Miller, aged 44 with 5 children. If you want the details I have written down let me know and I'll send them to you off list.
