    1. TV coincidences.
    2. Thought some of you might be amused by this. I don't watch a huge amount of TV, but as I was waiting for a 'phone call yesterday afternoon, I saw an episode of "House Auction" on Channel 4. (At least - I think that's what it was called.) My interest was sparked off by mention of a house here in Bath which had been rescued from near deriliction, and restored as a rather splendid B&B. Shortly before the programme's interval, it showed a picture of the house in question, which was to be featured in the second half. To my surprise, it was not only a matter of yards from my church, but I recognised it as having been the home of part of my family back in the early 1800s! Thank goodness for commercial breaks - I was able to ring my 6th cousin in London - a direct descendant of the Lansdown family who once owned it - and she was able to record the programme, and for the first time see inside her ancestral home! Not that I'd advocate watching too much television, but I thought it extraordinary that a genealogy link should appear from such an unexpected source! Regards, Colin Hunt

I am looking for ancestors to William Hembury- born in 1736 at Wedmore, Somerset UK. He married Mary Rossiter in 1764. He had 9 children: James who was born in 1796. Mary - born 1767 Benjamin - 1769 Henry - 1772 (stillborn) Henry - 1774 James - 1777 John - 1780 Joseph - 1782 Mary - 1786 I would love to hear from anyone who can ascribe a father / mother to WILLIAM above or add anthing to the earlier knowledge of this family. For those interested in later data, I have quite a deal of information on the Hembury's and the activities of this particular family here in Australia. Many thanks Kay Francis

    3. Hi Tim The Ancestry website indicates that none of the 1901 census for Wales is on-line yet. (However some/all of Wales is loaded for 1871/1881/1891) The 1891 census shows a Walter SMART aged 24 living in Merthyr Dovan (Dyfan on modern maps), Glamorgan with wife Sarah and 1 year old son Walter (born Barry, Glamorgan). I can send you the page image if these are yours. 1. Genealogy Fraud Alert
    2. Hi all NOT for list discussion......... There have been a number of messages around the lists to which we are subscribed reporting unauthorised withdrawal of funds from credit card and bank accounts connected with the company Research-UK, now bought by Ancestor Detectives. Sussex Police will collate all reports on this. Please contact their Crime Recording Investigation Bureau on 0845 6070999. They've now set up a reference number for the reports -quote 587 on 3 March. They *can* be contacted by email on contact.centre@sussex.police.uk , but as they have one person dealing with email, and 50 on the phones, they suggest those in the UK use the phone! Linda & Tony

    2. Jon Baker
    3. Hi Jim I have been researching the DOWNTON family in Dorset for several years now, my maternal Grandmother was Audrey Downton, and her Father was Andrew John Downton, born in 1879 in Buckland Newton. When he was about 12 the family moved to the Isle of Wight which is where I come from. I have traced the Downton name back several generations, and have collected lots of information about other Downton families in the area between Dorchester and Sherborne on the Somerset border. The Downton name is relatively uncommon, when looked at nationally, but there are significant groupings in 3 or 4 counties, Dorset, Devon, Somerset and Shropshire being the main groupings (as well as London). I cannot find any reference to a George Downton around 1845 in my own family database. I have looked in the 1851 index for Dorset, and checked birth registrations against FreeBMD. There is only one Thomas Downton registered born in Dorset between 1843 and 1847, George Sidney Downton registered in Mar qtr 1846 in Weymouth district. Of course FreeBMD is not complete yet, but coverage around this time is relatively good. The 1851 index would suggest this is probably George Downton aged 5 born and living in Radipole. The good news is his Father is Thomas, the not so good news is that the Mother's name in the Census is Sarah, not Mary (there is a transcription of the 1851 census for Radipole on the Dorset OPC site http://www.dorset-opc.com/ Of course the 1851 census could be a blind alley, since there is nothing to say that the family were still living in Dorset in 1851. I think it would be worth spending some time seeing if there were other George Downtons registered in Dorset around this time, allowing maybe 5 years either way. Remember though that birth registration was legally required but was not well enforced at this time. Don't forget by the way that there are occasionally some variants of Downton, including Dowton, Dounton and even Downtown. Hope this helps. You can find most of Downton family online, see my signature below. 1. Ham RODAWAY
    2. I am researching Ham RODAWAY, my GGGGrandfather, who was born in Rode circa 1806. He moved to Otterbourne in Hampshire sometime before 1830 where he remained until his death in 1895. I believe that Ham's parents were James Rodaway and Sarah Craddock. I would be pleased to hear from anyone who is able to provide me with some pointers into Ham's ancestry. I am also keen to ascertain more of the history of Rode in the early 1800's to try and ascertain why Ham may have moved to Otterbourne Thanks Alan Peggs
