As a Catholic family we will be watching the funeral at 9am on the telly. Seems strange at the moment not to have a head of our Church, I am sure we will be lucky enough to have a good man to fill his shoes. Hi all Would be interested in any info on Jarvis/Garvis from Doulting/Binegar/Shepton Mallett/Axbridge areas of Somerset. Regards Sally
Forgive me for using this medium, but I wanted to extend my sympathies to our Roman Catholic fellow researchers upon the death of His Holiness, Pope John Paul the Second. This Anglican found much to inspire him in the work and witness of the Pope, and the world will be a poorer place without him. Warm wishes, Colin Hunt.
Hi Judy, Are you sure the parent's names were not recorded in the Parish Register (which is unusual in my experience)? Even more unlikely to get a birth date and baptism date and no parents so perhaps you need to check that register again. The only other avenue I can think of are the 1841 and 1851 Censuses for the area to find the family. I don't research in Wiltshire so I don't know if they are indexed or not. The 1851 Census will give you the birthplaces of the parents if you find them. Hello Judy, Re: Joseph Hall - There is a Joseph Hall aged 25 in 1851 in Dilton(s) Marsh which is close to Westbury Leigh. If this is he then he would have been born in 1825 not 1835, but I cannot find anyone matching in Westbury, neither can I find any direct reference to Westbury Leigh. This Joseph's father was James, labourer aged 50 and his mother was Ann aged 48 all born in Westbury. Hi All, I have just received the marriage certificate for John Amor married to Martha Ann Bull. They were married Mar 30, 1850. On it it says John's father is William Armor. I have been unable to find a John with father William born abt 1811. The only one I have found is John Illegitimate of Hannah, in Milton. The census all say John Amor is from Milton. any help on this would be appreciated. Thank you, Kay
My grandmother Edith Carrie Humphries nee Swift re-married a widower Arthur DICKS in 1921 at Hinton Charterhouse in Somerset. Arthur was born 1880 at Freshford between Bath and Bradford-on-Avon. His siblings were Henry, Emily, William, Ida, Frank, Fanny, Albert, Eliza Olive, Flora and Sidney. Arthur's father was Job DICKS born 1853 at Lacock in Wiltshire. Job's siblings were Emily, Phineas, Eli, and Mark. Job's father was Thomas DIX born 1814 at Melksham, Wiltshire to a Peter DIX. Please, if anyone can help to fill in any information on this family then I would be very grateful. I would particularly like to know more about Peter DIX. It doesn't look like he was baptised in Melksham and I don't know who were his parents. Also Arthur Dicks had been married before and had children one of whom may have been Victor so I'd like to find out more about them. Surname interests: Allen, Batchelor, Bath, Bennett, Burfitt, Curtis, Dicks, Evans, Francis, Fulford, Gailer, Gilbert, Goodwin, Green, Humphries, Keeping, Knight, Langridge, Legrove, Pollard, Ramseur, Smith, Stacey, Starks, Swift, Williams in the counties of Somerset, Wiltshire, Dorset and Hampshire. Many thanks.
Hi list, I am looking for the baptism of either Anthony or Christopher Pring in the early 1700's in Somerset, probably around the Milverton area. I have Edward Pring bapt 1754 in Milverton whose parents were William Pring and Mary Sowthey, married 1748 in Milverton. Other children of the marriage were William bapt 1752 and John bapt 1756. It is William's snr's parents I want to confirm and there are two William's that would fit, one born in 1726 and one in 1727 both in Milverton. The one born 1726 has parents Anthony & Mary nee Farthing married in 1725 Milverton The one born 1727 has parents Christopher & Elizabeth, nee Bennett, married 1716 Milverton. There doesn't seem to be a baptism record for either Anthony or Christopher on David Cheeks site, so I wondered if anyone had any information on either of these two? Any help is much appreciated Thanks Ann

I have a feeling you emailed me before. However my Sarah Bezent was born abt 1827. She married Frederick Crook at Pewsey, Wiltshire, 30 Apr 1853. No father's name on the marriage certificate. I am stuck at that point. Wish they would have put mother's name on but that wasn't done!!! I have checked the Pewsey parish record and didn't find her. She could have come from somewhere else? I think I contacted you once before Kay but I am not sure. I have quite a good deal of information about the Besant/Bezant family in Portsea, Hampshire. My Sarah Besant married George Rothwell also in 1853. Sarah's age on her wedding certificate was 21. I wonder if the two families are connected somewhere? On my long family tree which was given to me by another member of the family, most of them lived in Hampshire but one branch of the family went to Dorset, some moved to London and also to New Zealand and Canada. Hi list, I wonder if someone would please be kind enough to check the 1841 census for Milverton, for a James Pring, who is married to Eliza, with daughter Mary Jane, aged about 4. All born Milverton. They are on the 1851 in Milverton, James aged 41, ag lab. Eliza 39, laundress and Mary Jane 14, scholar. all born Milverton. By the 1861 they were in Cardiff, James aged 55, Eliza 49.again, both born Milverton. I have the 1871 cd's for Glamorgan, but cannot find them as yet but it seems they are not on the Ancestry 1871. They, or another couple with the same names, both born Milverton, are on the 1881 in Cardiff, James aged 57 and Eliza 68 so there is something amiss there, though Eliza's age is about right. James & Eliza married in 1836, I have a copy of the parish record to confirm this. I think I can discount the age for James on the 1881 as that would mean his birth year was c 1824, and as he married in 1836, that would have made him 12 at time of marriage. If someone could find him on the 1841 aged about 31, with Eliza and Mary Jane, that would give me an approximate birth year to go on Many thanks Ann
