Apart from my researches SILCOCKS/X families in the south England & Wales for any period, I hav at last broken a brick wall in my SCOTTS (plural only) one name study. This has lead to the discovery that the SCOTTS surname was a corruption of SCUTTS and links to CARR, HOLBOROUGH/HOLBURROW surnames in Gloucestershire & Wiltshire at about 1800 and ealrier. A link has also been found to a Daniel COLLINS born in Bristol about 1807 according to the 1851 census. My ancestors had all left the area for London before the 1851 census. Can anyone help or be intersted in these surnames. Terry Silcock

Hi Maurice, Do you know Albins mothers name? Have you found him in 1871? I have found an Albert Thomas in 1871 who is a Thomas in 1881 living with his brother Henry. In 1871 their mother was also there, her name was Emily. Does this ring any bells with you. In 1871 place of birth is Witcheat, in 1881 Ditcheat. Let me know if you want further info. Colleagues I'm pleased to report that Oxfordshire FHS has recently released another census CD set. This time it's the 1841 census, which is a two CD set comprising a :- 1. detailed name index. 2. full transcription. 3. scans of all of the pages of the census enumerators' books. 4. county and city parish maps. 5. street indexes. This 1841 census release covers the whole of modern-day Oxfordshire, and so includes the North Berkshire area which became part of Oxfordshire in 1974. That's a lot of data, complete with finding aids, which we're hoping will be warmly welcomed by researchers with Oxfordshire and North Berkshire ancestry. Further details of this and our other census CD sets, including information about how to order them, can be found on our website at :- http://www.ofhs.org.uk/CDsales.html Best wishes. Hello Colleen and Sally. Below is an excerpt from the 1881 census. The family names are not of importance in this instance, but you will see a reference to Lower Ware. I suggest this is now called Lower Weare which is on the A38, a mile or so south west of Axbridge. If you turn off the main road and go to the school and then bear left you will be in Weare itself within about half a mile. I have lived in Somerset for 70 years and know no other village by the name of Ware. David. Thanks Colleen, That's a really helpful starting point - here's hoping! All the best, Colin.
On behalf of my cousin, does anyone know anything about a JAMES JOHN SELWAY, b. Bath circa 1871 (might be a few years later). He married Annie Clement(s) at St. Paul's Church in Bath in 1901. Regards, Colin Hunt
Colleagues I'm pleased to report that Oxfordshire FHS is about to release another parish register transcriptions CD. This time it's a third CD for the Witney area, which includes the registers of the following parishes :- Minster Lovell. Ramsden. Shifford. Southleigh. Standlake. Stanton Harcourt. Swinbrook. Taynton. Widford. Wilcote. Yelford. That's a lot of data, all of which is indexed, which we're hoping will be warmly welcomed by researchers with West Oxfordshire ancestry. Further details of this and our other parish register transcription CDs, including information about how to order them, can be found on our website at :- http://www.ofhs.org.uk/CDsales.html Anyone who is desperate to get their hands onto this CD can visit the family history fair at Kidlington today (Sunday), at which it is on sale from the Oxfordshire FHS stall. Best wishes. Paul Gaskell Minutes Secretary and Publicity Officer Oxfordshire Family History Society Web : www.ofhs.org.uk E-mail : publicity@ofhs.org.uk
