    1. Re: [WSX] Re: Chilcompton, Chew Magna and Stanton Drew
    2. I think the LDS library catalogue would be the first place to look. It's on line at their site Familysearch .org. I think you would be astounded as to what they have filmed. I even got my grandmothers enrolment records for a small school in Bristol. Poor law records for Kingston Deverill ------ what a wonderful source they were. Army discharge papers, the list just goes on. Before census records were available on CD the LDS was the place to view the census if you couldn't visit London. Cheaper to, only $5.00 to have the film . But I must admit I do like having my own copies of the census on CD at my fingertips. I bought all the Devon ones as 80% of my rellies are from there. A lot of family history societies have these available for members to use plus numerous other resources of course. I think the best idea is join your local FHS and have a good look at Familysearch and of course GENUKI. There is really something spooky and pleasurable about looking at your ancestors names in old records, if you find something unexpected it can bring tears to your eyes !!!!! But I am a genie junkie. 3. Hi Joy I have no idea where you live but if you are within travelling distance of a LDS (Mormon) Family History Centre films of bishop's transcripts for all 3 parishes are available for ordering and viewing. It appears when I look at the library holdings on the LDS site that the records for all these parishes are poor. That is to say, many years are missing and they have no parish registers filmed by the LDS, just Bishop's Transcripts. However having said that, the BTs do seem to pretty well cover the time period you have mentioned. The 45 minutes or so that I spend travelling to my nearest LDS centre is well worth it. Have you used one? Good luck with your searches Marjorie >I can find nothing more about his origins - Mary's maiden name, parents of >William and Mary, Charles's siblings - zilch! > >He married Charlotte BEACHAM in Stanton Drew in 1836 and they had 13 sons >and one daughter, of whom I have found six sons and Sarah, the daughter. >What became of the other seven sons? > >Can anyone advise me where to start looking for all this missing info, >please? 3. Hi Listers My 3GGF, James BEACHAM, was b about 1795 and married Sarah?? about 1814 in Chew Magna. They produced six children, some in Chew Magna and some in Stanton Drew. I would love to know Sarah's maiden name and discover the parents of both James and Sarah. Has anyone access to parish records for either of these villages, please? They don't even appear on Hugh Wallis's website. Kind regards Joy

    3. Hi Listers My 2GGF, Charles COX, was born in Chilcompton in 1814 to farmer, William COX and Mary. I can find nothing more about his origins - Mary's maiden name, parents of William and Mary, Charles's siblings - zilch! He married Charlotte BEACHAM in Stanton Drew in 1836 and they had 13 sons and one daughter, of whom I have found six sons and Sarah, the daughter. What became of the other seven sons? Can anyone advise me where to start looking for all this missing info, please? Also, where would Chilcompton parish records be available? Kind regards Joy

    1. Jarman, German, Jermyn
    2. John German
    3. I'm looking for the origins of a Thomas GERMAN (or JARMAN) who was indentured in Bristol in 1662 and bound for Maryland. Was he the same Thomas GERMAN or JARMAN who was living in Calvert County, Maryland, as early as 1680? In 1680 he received a small payment from the estate of Izaccy VANTREES (apparently a matter of debt not kinship). Thomas GERMAN was still living in Calvert County about 1708 when he and a Peter MADRING were the co-owners of a small parcel of land. Peter MADRING died about 1718; an estate for Thomas JARMAN is not yet found. I would enjoy direct contact with any Jarmans (and variants) who read this. John German german@jarman.net

    2. John German
    3. From the Wiveliscombe, Somerset, parish record transcripts, it appears Thomas GERMAN (or JARMAN) was baptised in 1632, and his father William was buried in 1646/7. Are there any surviving apprentice records from that time and area? Thank you.

    2. Dr. Richard Elliott
    3. I finally found my information on a relative, Henry Bond, who was born in Somersetshire on March 12, 1832. He was the son of Thomas and Mary (Ewletts) Bond. Henry's father, Thomas, was a liveryman and passes away in 1860 at the age of seventy-nine and his wife, Mary, passed away in 1869. The family were Quakers. Thomas and Mary had 5 children: Amelia (married Charles Cullen) who lived and died in England; Henry; Thomas who came to California for the gold rush; John who died in Australia; and William who also went to Australia. Our Henry sailed from Liverpool for New York in 1849. That is all the info. I have on our Bond relatives, hope it matches someone elses or is of help to someone.
