I am American and would like to send my deepest sympathies to any of those who have been hurt or affected by the barbaric act you've suffered in London today. May God bless you and keep you at this time in particular. I continue to question when this horror will end. The Wiltshire Community History (a great resource for Wiltshire places/parishes!) page for Devizes is here: http://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/community/getcom2.php?id=77 I''m afraid I don't have local knowledge of Devizes though, so perhaps someone else on the list can help you more ... 3. Hi Meg I'll just butt in here with one answer to your query re location of records. If you have a LDS Family History centre within travelling distance for you parish records and/or bishop's transcripts can be ordered for the churches in Devizes. Many churches are listed on the LDS web site http://www.familysearch.org under the library section and you can also look to see where the nearest LDS centre to you is located. Two Church of England churches mentioned that cover the early 1880s are St Mary's and St John the Baptist. There are also Presbyterian, Congregational, Baptist and more churches mentioned for that time period. If you are not used to searching on their site let me know and I can help you navigate it. I use their facilities frequently because there is access to so many church records as well as other records through their filming projects for just a nominal handling charge for one month. Good luck Marjorie >Thank you so much for this information. 3. Hi Celia, Thank you so much for this information. I did have some of it, particularly during their period in London but is very helpful to have some feel for where Eliza was at each census. I now have the death certs of all three (Joseph, Ann and Eliza) and you are right in all your comments. I have never been able to pin down Joseph's parents. 1. Re: [WSX] ELLEN
    2. Celia Mycock
    3. In the 1881 census Eliza ELLEN was actually at a place named St Bartholomew's Home in/on Old Park in Devizes (St John's parish) - the address is now Hartmoor Road, south-west of Devizes town centre. "None" is stated in the occupation column and her age is clearly shown as 56. It appears to have been a private residential home - the head is a matron and there are 2 domestic servants plus five girls aged between 10 and 14 whose occupation is shown as "Industrial", and then Eliza ELLEN unm aged 56, blind. The next enumerated address is Old Park House, a rather grand establishment (now a listed building), so possibly St Bartholomew's Home was a charity supported by the family living there, headed by a Harriette SMITH aged 86, landowner. Eliza ELLEN is not in the 1891 census as her death is registered in Q. March 1888 aged 58 in Devizes (GRO ref. 5a 70.) In 1871 however she was in the (probably) rather less comfortable Union Workhouse, St James, Devizes - unmarried, aged 40, born Andover, Hants, and blind. In 1861 she was unmarried, aged 29, no occupation and blind, living on Pans Lane, Chapelry of St James, Devizes - with her parents Joseph ELLEN 59, a woolstapler, born Devizes, and her mother Ann 56 born Andover, Hants. I thought that maybe her parents had died before 1871, but they were in Bermondsey, Southwark - Joseph aged 69, woolstapler born Devizes and Ann(but looks like Ada?) 56 born Andover. Also in 1881 Joseph is a lodger at 6 Whitelocks Court St Mary's Devizes, a widower aged 80, woolstapler, born Devizes. His death was in Q. June 1887 aged 87 in Devizes (GRO ref.5a 56) - from www.freebmd.org.uk - and there is also a death registration for an Ann ELLEN aged 71, in Camberwell Q. March 1876 (ref.1d 493). You may have had some of this information before, but hope this helps a bit. 3. Dear Sally and all, I saw your interest in WILLIAMS and ALLEN in Somerset earlier this month. My great great grandmother was Mary Ann Williams who was born about 1829 at Freshford near Bradford-on-Avon in Wiltshire. She married John Humphries (junior) in 1851 and they lived at Hinton Charterhouse near Bath in Somerset. Mary Ann's father and grandfather were both Robert Williams' from Ditcheat, Somerset but I don't know from where the Williams family originated. My great great great grandmother was Mary Allen who was born about 1795 at Hinton Charterhouse and married in 1820 there to John Humphries (senior). Mary's ancestors were (probably) George, John and William Allen taking it back to about 1680 at Hinton Charterhouse. Where in Somerset do your Williams and Allen families live ? Perhaps you would be willing to share some more information. Regards, Jacqueline. 1. Quaker names -- Metford, Ellis (I'm new to list) 17c-19c SOM, DEV, Street and Wessex
    2. Michel Metford-Platt
    3. Hello, I've just joined this list and a couple of others in the area. My name is Michel and am presently in S. Africa (I'm from N. America originally). Being in S. Africa, I didn't have internet for about 5 years but this year that has been rectified. My great-grandfather was from Taunton, Somerset, from the Badcock and Metford families (Ellis families came from Devon). I have a tremendous amount on the Metfords (most were Quaker) and I've been able to trace back to the 17th century on many lines. I've come to Taunton (and Devon) on two occasions in the 90s with my mother to look at old family homes in Taunton (Flook, Fons George and The Elms) as well as the Anderdon family in Ruishton. Also travelled to Street in Somerset and didn't quite make it to Uffculme in Devon (but we tried). But did get to Bath. If you find any METFORD he or she is probably related, but if you come across one in your files, let me know. I've been researching off and on since 1978 (I started when I was 14). From what I could tell, my people were involved in malt making, the clothing industry and have left a pretty good trail of land records. The rest of the families are as follows: Ellis and Ellis alias Salter of Uffculme and Burlescombe, DEV Metford of Taunton and Glastonbury, SOM Anderdon of Bath and Ruishton (Henlade House), SOM Badcock of Bampton, DEV, later Taunton, SOM (the Bankers) Hulet, Hulett, Hewlett and Hewlett of Street, SOM Parker of Bampton, DEV Prockter alias Mathew and Mathewe alias Prockter of Ruishton, SOM Mabson of Glaston, SOM Dinham of Taunton, SOM (allied) Button of Taunton, SOM (allied) I have other allied families (like Wright and Mallet/Mallett), but others are not my research (Clothier, Clarke, Rawes). I am grateful to Jonathan Hepworth over the years for the latter. I have Will extracts from Metford and Ellis I will share if anyone is interested. I would also like to trace back further and sort out my strays (don't we all!). Michel Metford-Platt
