    3. I'm an American trying to find English roots of Thomas GERMAN (or JARMAN) who resided in Maryland in the late 1600s. I would like to learn more about the Thomas GERMAN who was indentured in Bristol in 1662 and bound for Maryland. I'm wondering what became of Thomas and Henry GERMAN (or JARMAN) christened in 1632 and 1635 in Wiveliscombe, sons of William GERMAN (or JARMAN). If the William buried there in 1646 was their father then they were orphans - what records might I find of orphans in that time period? Is this the Thomas GERMAN bound for America in 1662? Where is Henry? Are there any other candidates for the 1662 Thomas GERMAN or JARMAN? Thanks.

    1. Brickwall - Richard FOOT
    2. Cathy Pinner
    3. Hi all, I have a brickwall with my great great grandfather Richard FOOT(E) (1809-1864) I can't find his birth/baptism - so can't find his parents. He married in Castleton, Dorset in 1829 a minor aged 20 - so born about 1809 but I don't think the consent, if any, has survived. On all censuses during his lifetime he claimed to have been born in Sherborne, Dorset, where he lived. Interestingly both he and his wife dropped their ages by 2 years in the 1851 and 1861 censuses but are recorded with correct ages at death. I haven't done an exhaustive search of parishes around Sherborne for a baptism but have looked at quite a number - though it's mostly the BTs available through LDS in Australia. Others have checked the Sherborne PR for me without success. I keep an eye on www.familyhistoryonline.com for updates to the Dorset Baptism index. He may be connected to the FOOT families in Sherborne who were lawyers/solicitors as one of his children became a solicitor's clerk - but this may just be coincidence. He himself was a Shopman/Draper. Any ideas welcome, Cathy

    3. Hi Sylvia, 1) Have you looked at the various censuses? You haven't been specific enough with places to help you with this easily. Where was Agnes born? What county/counties are the places in? The only one showing in ParLoc is Ruardean in Gloucestershire. 2) When looking for Catherine - consider all variations and contractions. I come from a line of Catherine/Catharine and it was a strong family name. Most were called Kate and some registered at birth as Kate but marrying as Catherine. Some appear on censuses as Kate/Katie though most as Catherine/Catharine 3) It's unlikely that you'll find a father in this period if he's not mentioned on the birth certificate or marriage certificate. They seem to have stopped chasing the father for maintenance and started blaming the mother. Cathy At 20:32 27/07/2005, you wrote: >Hi I have a "brickwall that I`ve tried to get down for 4 years. 3. Thanks Sandra, That was good advice. It gives me some hope! Cheers Karenn -----Original Message----- From: Sandra J Smith [mailto:sandra.s@ntlworld.com] Sent: Thursday, 28 July 2005 9:20 PM To: WESSEX-PLUS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [WSX] Brickwalls etc To all those brickwall climbers! When I first started my genealogy 40 years ago, there were no databases, few deposited registers and even fewer transcriptions of registers. So when I cane up against my "brickwalls" the investigation had to be pursued along tried and tested research procedures. Most people were living within a few miles of their parish of birth (can't remember the source of that information, but I seem to remember reading that pre-industrial revolution, approximately 75% were born within a 5 mile radius) Draw a cirle round your parish of 5 miles radius - Parloc is ideal for this - and search each parish in turn. If you still cant findthe person concerned, extend the radius by a couple of miles and search those parishes too. One particular brick wall I had was overcome after about ten 180 mile round trips to the County in which I was interested. In many cases arrangements had to be made with incumbents of parishes to view their registers and in many cases a fee was payable. Today, life is so much easier, particularly if the LDS has filmed the register and it is available through a local LDS Family History Centre. However, one still has to resort to a systematic search through the surrounding parishes. Another point worth remembering is that even though someone claimed to be born in a particular parish, it did not mean that they were baptised there. Sometimes a child was baptised in the grandparent's parish, perhaps at the time of a family gathering, so it may be worth considering the parish of origin of the mother. Hope my words are not considered too much "teaching how to suck eggs" by experienced listers, but I thought that they might help anyone who is relatively new to genealogy. Nov1874 Catherine was a servant at Joys Green(nearby)The only counties involved are Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Monmouthshire. I dont know what you mean by Parloc but certainly Ruardean is one of the possible places as Catherine was described on a document as being"late of Ruardean(in 1874) Id appreciate you letting me know the info you have about Ruardean. I have looked at some variants but the few times I`ve seen Catherine`s name written down it has always had the same spelling thanks again and best wishes SYlvia From: Cathy Pinner <kit52@wn.com.au> Reply-To: WESSEX-PLUS-L@rootsweb.com To: WESSEX-PLUS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [WSX] stone or brick walls - POWELL Date: Fri, 29 Jul 2005 10:03:32 +0800 Hi Sylvia, 1) Have you looked at the various censuses? 3. Hello List, My brick wall in Ann WATERS. She was born in 1813/14 in Corton, Wiltshire. I can't find her birth record so I don't know who her parents or siblings were. The clues I have found are that a Joseph WATTERS witnessed her marriage to Philip NORTH in Durnford in 1836. I can't find her in the 1841 census, but her husband Philip and sons George and Frederick are in Corton. I'm hoping that she is visiting relatives somewhere else close by. If any comes across her as Ann North in the 1841 census, please let me know. Thanks Karenn from Canberra

    3. Hello Fellow Brick Wallers! I did post the names a few months ago, so I'll actually be a bit more general. I am back the the 1700s in many lines, but my real frustration is not being able to access Quaker records. Being in South Africa, I can't visit any place with great ease, and with the relative weakness of the rand, it is almost impossible to get bank cheques to send to various places with hopes of finding someone elusive. On the other hand, when I ordered wills from the online site of national archives it was R50 well spent! Of course that was R50 each and 16 of the 19 were goldmines. So I must always weigh up the benefit versus the gamble. If someone said, hey! I found your (Metford, Ellis, Badcock, Anderdon, Parker, Mabson, Hulet) ancestors on a really good chart, I would run to the bank. Anyway, those are the family names I'm studying. I'm looking for Quaker records. I'm going to present a tiny tafel of names (for some reason HULET of Street bef 1700 didn't make it, nor did MABSON): A536 1465 1803 ANDERDON\Ruishton, SOM/Jamaica, West Indies A536 1781 1781 ANDERSON\Jamaica/Jamaica (Clarendon Parish?) 3. My longstanding brick wall is HARFORD. My ancestor Samuel HARFORD was baptised in Heytesbury on 12 Nov 1808 at the same time as his brother Robert. Parents names were William HARFORD and Elizabeth. I have quite a lot of information on Samuel, very little on Robert and can find no other references to William and Elizabeth, the parents, at all. It's as though they breezed into Heytesbury, baptised the two kids then disappeared! Samuel married Mary Anne Brown in Heytesbury on 22 Sep 1830 so it would seem likely he grew up in or nearby to Heytesbury. Robert and his wife, also Mary Anne, baptised their son Robert in Heytesbury 20 Jan 1834. Samuel migrated to South Australia in 1837. Robert may have emigrated as well but whereabouts unknown. What happened to William & Elizabeth? Where did they marry, live, die? Where did Robert marry and what was his wife's surname? Where did he go after 1834? Any ideas will be most appreciated Eileen
