Hi Karenn I am interested in the name of BISHOP but mainly from Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire. Do you think there may be a connection with your BISHOPs in Woodford ? I would be interested to know what you transcribed. Best wishes, Shelagh.
My brick wall in Wessex has long been what happened to the sister of my great grandmother. Frances Mary Helen Purvis was included with her father in the 1891 census, living at "Melrose", Highweek, Devon. She was age 20 and single. My grandmother said that Fanny married someone named Eden, and they had settled in or near Plymouth. Indeed when her father died in 1895 she was the informant and signed herself "Fanny Eden", so had married, if she did marry, by then. But I have looked in the GRO indexes several times and not found the entry. Fanny and her husband had, again according to my Gran, two daughters, Dorothy and Nora. It might have helped if her father, a rear-admiral, had left a will, but none exists. Does anyone recognise these names? Thanks Ron Dunning
James,John,Ann and Sarah Hawker were baptised March 1802 in Broadwindsor.I have traced John and James but have had no success with Ann and Sarah. Has any lister a connection? Regards,Charles.
Hello, I am trying to find any information about DARCY WILTON FORRESTER BATTERN, who was a journalist when he married my aunt Frances May FOWLER on July 24 1912 in Taunton. Somerset. I believe he was born in Cheltenham,Gloucester in 1886, the son of a Royal Navy Captain, Wilton Forrester Battern, but I don't know his mother's name. I would like to find out where Darcy and Frances lived after their marriage and also whether there were any children. I have checked the Free BMD and Family Search sites, also the Commonwealth War Graves for possible dates of death for him without success. Any information or helpful suggestions as to possible further sources would be most gratefully received. Sally In N.Z -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Hi Listers The latest CD releases from this society both comprise a further selection of parish register transcriptions, one for the Bicester area and one for the Headington area. Details of the parish register transcripts included on these particular CDs can be found at :- http://www.ofhs.org.uk/CDsales.html Both of these CDs also have two "added value" features :- 1. there is at least one colour photograph, sometimes more, of each church thereon. 2. a copy of the complete "Oxfordshire Parish Registers and Bishop's Transcripts" by Colin Harris - the Oxfordshire and North Berkshire researchers' bible - is included thereon in digital format. Further details of these CDs and how to obtain your copy can be found at :- http://www.ofhs.org.uk/CDsales.html Any queries, please let me know off-list. Best wishes. Yes, thanks I have tried every possible variation on the spelling. It is frequently mispelled Ritchings or the s left off. It seems such a simple name, but difficult to research. Nancy, I remember many years ago, a student of mine was tracing the name of Richings and discovered that the name was often spelt as RICHENS. Have you tried that spelling variation? Hi Nancy There are a few families in the '51 of the counties I've got, but no John matching that sort of description. I've checked Somerset, Wiltshire, Worcestershire and Devon; I don't have any others. Possibly of interest though is the following from the Somerset Marriage Index: Groom James Richings status of , Bride Betty Oliff or Cliff ? status of , married on 25 Jun 1824 at parish Lyncombe & Widcombe by Witnesses Samuel Rogers, Charlotte Rogers Notes which is the one and only Richings marriage in there, suggesting that the family aren't native to Somerset at least. FamilyHistoryOnline has a few more 1851 censuses than this; it might be worth a try! Hi all. Thought I'd try a different tack! Does anyone have any of the following in their trees? They are all my Great-great-grandparents: Charles HUNT (b. ? Westminster circa 1795) and Elizabeth WILLIS (b. ? Norton St. Philip circa 1796) (married at Wellow 10th October 1822) Samuel GRABHAM (b. Bath circa 1805) and Susanna Eliza SARTAIN (b. Bath 1815) (married at Walcot 17th August 1843) William Crowcombe CROSS (b. Bridgwater 1843) and Ann EDWARDS (b. Huntspill 1837) (married at Huntspill 2nd January 1865) Eli BARTLETT (b. Halstock 1821) and Sarah Pridham SHORNEY (b. Cannington 1826) (married Bridgwater area 1846) John TALBOT (b. Butleigh 1839) and Eliza ALMOND (b. Camerton 1842) (married Midsomer Norton 24th March 1864) John Pow ALMOND (b. Clandown 1838) and Martha LONGMAN (b. Temple Cloud 1836) (married Walcot 1859) George CARTER (b. Paulton 1817) and Elizabeth CHAPMAN (b. Paulton 1822) (married Paulton 26th December 1842) And yes - there are only seven couples as John Almond and Martha Longman had two children who are both my Great-grandparents! Fingers crossed. Regards to all. Colin Hunt
My brick wall is the Richings family. John Richings, son of James, was born on Feb 18. 1831, no place know, but somewhere in the west of England. He married Mary Birt on Dec. 24, 1853 in Mosely Green, Gloc., and soon after that they came to the USA. He was a coal miner, but on his marriage license his father was listed as James Richings, a farmer!! I have checked all of the Richings families on the 1851 census of Gloucestershire without any success, but have not had access to other counties in the west of the country. He would have been 20 years old on the 1851 census and since they left England in 1854, he is not listed on any others. I don't believe that his family came to the USA, but am not certain of that. I have found some information on Mary Birt's family, but John's home and family remain a mystery. Thanks for any help. Nancy Richings
Hi Karrenn, Thanks a ton for all your hard work I and sure that you devoted a lot of time on my behalf, for which i would like to let you know I appreciate it very much. You know it is quite sentimental looking at the images as I know that at the time they where there giving the info, probably reluctantly, but what they did not know is that one day, that info they gave would give future family a indication as of who they where.and where they lived. I will study the censes and see if George senior is related. You really did help break the wall done, and thanks for that. I have been searching for my ancestor James Stamp for a long time, but have now found him in the 1861 census living in Hampstead Middlesex where he was listed as a 77 year old gardener. living at Stamps Cottage, presumably in the grounds of Foley House, Well Walk with his wife Ann .All of James and Ann's children were baptised at St John's Hampstead so they lived there a lot of years. My problem which hopefully SKS can help me with is that he gives his place of birth as Ovington Devon. I am not familiar with that part of our country but a quick search soon revealed that Ovington is in Hampshire. Mmm, does anyone have any ideas as to why James would think he was born in Hampshire? Is it possible that there is some small hamlet called Ovington or in the experience of the listers is some other explanation more likely? There is another slight link with Hampshire in that James and Ann's son, Charles, my great great grandfather had his first child baptised at Hampstead, having married in Hull, Yorks but his second child was baptised in 1847 at Houghton Hampshire. All their subsequent children were baptised in Lincolnshire. Regards Sue
My first posting with this list. I am researching from the Bentworth area of Hampshire the Cole Family. My GGGGrandfather John Cole was born in Bentworth 1814 son of James Cole. Jean Gray

I'm looking up some of Ian's ancestors. I'm convinced that Ian is descended from a John MAY, stone mason, born ~1809 Bradworthy, and Mary, born ~1815 Holsworthy. However, I need some more information to trace the tree back further. Does anybody have a copy of the parish records for Bradworthy, DEV? I am interested to know if the Mary WALTER who married John MAY on 28 Mch 1833, was the daughter of Charles WALTER and his wife Sarah STEVENS. Also was this John MAY a stone mason, and was he the son of Charles MAY and Jane? If all these suppositions are correct, then I'll be a happy bunny as there is a lot of information about the WALTER family on the web (which seems to be borne out on web-sites showing wills, etc) dating back to the 1600s. Many thanks, Tina
Hi List, Have another problem. I'm looking for a marriage for a Lawrence North to a 'Mary'. Their children were born in Woodford, Wiltshire in 1758 and 1763. There is no recorded marriage in Woodford that I can find, and it's not on the IGI. If anyone sees him in the surrounding parishes, please let me know. Thanks Karenn Canberra Australia
Hello List, There are 2 marriages on the IGI for a Mary Stride marrying in Wiltshire in Oct of 1762. 1 is to John Goodfellow in Burcombe, Wiltshire and the other is John Jeffery at St Mary, Wilton by Salisbury. The Mary Stride I am looking for was born in Woodford in Feb 1737. Can anyone help find the right Mary?
