Thank you for this reply but on checking this found that they have a 9 pound charge for orders before the cost of the fiche and postage and this all for maybe two of three entries of one's own. Already donating some older records to Societies. Then this is where I think the $190NZ sub for Ancestry is very much worth the price, already I am having to think how to dispose of my 'records' before my children throw it on the tip, all files and transcribed records go safe houses. I subscribed to Ancestry now as well. Having all the British Census on line from 1851 to 1901 is so very handy. I mostly use it for that but also for the ship's lists although I just have a few ancestors who came to Canada. Most of them stayed in England and are still there! The neatest thing is finding another cousin. Taken from http://uk.biz.yahoo.com/moneyweekly/budget2005/quirkyfacts.html Dodgy taxes These days we grit our teeth and wait for Budget news on alcohol, tobacco and fuel duties, or inheritance, stamp duty or capital gains tax. But back in the nineteenth century you would have been taxed according to how many dogs you had. Tax collectors apparently used to kick the front door and count how many barks there were. How's that for a _stealth tax_ (http://uk.rd.yahoo.com/finance/mw/artlink/*http://uk.biz.yahoo.com/moneyweekly/stealthtaxes.html) . Taxes on hats, dice, clocks, salt, hair powder, gloves, artificial flowers, menservants, game certificates and armorial bearings have also been used in the past. In the first half of the nineteenth century people were even taxed according to how many windows their house had, which eventually led to many houses having windows bricked up. But tax oddities are by no means a thing of the distant past. McVities fought a tribunal case in 1991 against the classification of Jaffa Cakes as a VAT-able chocolate–covered biscuit. It asserted that they were instead a tax-free cake, and won its case by bringing a giant 12-inch Jaffa Cake to the hearing. Until the 1970s it was possible to buy a 12-foot ladder for less than a nine-inch one, because the shorter ladder was taxable, while the longer one was not. Linda and Tony

A tax on the use of Hair Powder was introduced by an Act of Parliament in 1795. Citizens who wore powdered wigs (or powdered their hair direct) had to obtain a certificate from the local Justices of the Peace to confirm that they had paid the annual tax of one guinea [ £1 1s 0d, or £1.05 in modern money ]. Hi David If no one else has replied I live close to the Trowbridge RO and could go and see if they have copies of said newspapers for Malmesbury. It may have only a straightforward death notice of course but will give it a go. Let me know if you still need the info and I will try and go in early next week. G'day, Is there anyone on the list who could look up the appropriate local newspapers for Malmesbury for June/July 1977? I'm seeking an obituary or death notice for an Alexander Stewart Pearson of Malmesbury who died on the 28th June 1977. I think he is a cousin of mine, however the death certificate appears to contain some discrepancies preventing me from establishing a positive I.D. The probate office say that they cannot find any probate being granted. Thanks in advance David Armstrong, Maylands, Western Australia Researching Delamont, Jeffery, Perry, Pearce, Slade, Stagg

Hi This is my first posting to this list and I am hoping SKS can help me solve a bit of a puzzle I have. I am trying to find out more details about the Reverend John Victor, b. c. 1819 in Sancreed, Cornwall who married Jane Behenna, b. c. 1811 in St Ives. They were married at the Register Office in Clifton, Bristol on the 30th July 1845. John was a noted Wesleyan Minister who spent the last 40 years of his life as the pastor of Copse Road Chapel, Seavale Road, Clevedon, Somerset. He died on the 3rd February 1894 in Clevedon so he must have been the pastor there from about 1854 until his death. I would like to know if this church is still is still there and if so would they be likely to have any records of John. My other query relates to his 2nd marriage.which took place between Janes death, in about 1878, and the 1881 census. In the 1881 census Johns wifes name is, I think, 'Ketura' and she was b. c. 1849 in Scotland. I have been unsuccessful in tracing a marriage for them but perhaps I should be looking for it in Scotland. I would really like to find out who she was and would be most grateful for any help anyone can give me Thank you in advance Liz
Hi list, I was wondering if anbody would be able to help me with information on my GGGGGrandfather Robert Bridcut/Bridcutt. he was born about 1780 in Oxfordshire. The 1851 Census is not clear but gives his place of birth as Balston, and I have been unable to locate anywhere of that name in Oxon. I know he married Mary ? and settled in Bedford where he died in 1857 aged 77. Can anybody give me an idea where Balston may be or have access to any parish records. Thanks Dave Howells

As you're probably aware, the censuses of Oxfordshire and North Berkshire for both 1841 and 1851 have been transcribed and indexed by the members of the Oxfordshire FHS. Our 1841 effort is sold as a splendid two CD set, which includes scans of the census enumerators' books themselves :- http://www.ofhs.org.uk/CDsales.html Strangely, I can't find your Robert BRIDCUT(T) in either of our 1841 or 1851 transcriptions, but these entries might interest you :- 1841 census - All present county HO 107/876/6 Bullingdon Hundred Marsh Baldon Folio, Place, H, Surname, Forename, Age, Occpn, Born in county? 6, , 1, BRIDCUT , James , 66 , Ag. You'll see where that is if you download our free Oxfordshire parishes map :- http://www.ofhs.org.uk/web/ofhs.html The parish records that we make available are transcripts of registers, which have been indexed too. These are published on microfiche, and in some cases on CD too. For further details, please see :- http://www.ofhs.org.uk/mfiche.html http://www.ofhs.org.uk/CDsales.html I hope that helps. Hi, I have currently lost my web space with a server that is no longer in business. My webpage is purely genealogical and has attracted a lot of attention and comments while online. I did find my original source from these pages but unfortunately he is no longer able to provide the space. My domain name www.bayntun-history.com It deals with the history of the Bayntuns, an English family from Wiltshire from 1100's to present day But I am obviously no longer online and anxious to get back again. Do any of you folks have a server that I could upload with and re-register the domain name. Thanks GERRY CULLEN
Greetings. Does anyone have access to transcripts of the BL registers please? I'm looking for the baptism of a George CROSS in 1818/1819 or thereabouts (preferably the son of John...!). Thanks in advance. Regards, Colin Hunt
