    3. Hi I,m new to the list and have just discovered that my ancestor Hi!, I,m new to the list and have just discovered that my ancestor Nicholas Windsor was born in 1706 Rollestone, Wilts. parents were Richard Windsor and Mary Sop , married in 1704 in Maddington,Wilts. Nicholas married Anne Newman in 1735 Berwick, Wilts. I,m trying to find out where Richard was born, I have found on the IGI a Richard Winsor born 1679 Staverton, Devon which would be arround the right date, but there are other Richards born in other places arround that time, the IGI lists the father of Richard as being George. all these names repeat in the family. Could anyone have any more info, and if I,m on the right branch. Also if anyone has these names in their tree, would like to hear from them. Many thanks, and seasons greetings to all. 3. Dear Linda, Yes it does, but in the geographical sense, the area Wessex does not all included Devon, just the parts bordering Dorset and Somerset. But if you have some Devon research to do why not try the Devon List: List name: DEVON To Subscribe: mailto:DEVON-D-request@rootsweb.com To Post: mailto:DEVON-L@rootsweb.com Another brilliant resource for Devon is the GENUKI http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/ The IGI coverage is not good, but is also useful Good luck with your quest. 1. RE: [WSX] family disease
    2. Terry Ball
    3. Hi Clive The term "disseminated lupus" is more commonly known today as "Systemic Lupus Erythematosus" or SLE. It mainly affects females and there is thought to be some genetic link. For more information try www.lupus.org. Regards Terry -----Original Message----- From: Clive Henly [mailto:clive@henly.eclipse.co.uk] Sent: 28 November 2005 01:04 To: WESSEX-PLUS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [WSX] family disease Here is my family story - this is definitely true as the disease in question was passed down to a distant cousin of mine who, fortunately for her, was cured of it. The disease in question, called "disseminated lupus", is passed only through the female line, and affects only women. I believe my gr-gr-grandmother Eleanor Doman (or Dolman) suffered from it. She was born in Derry Hill (near Calne) in 1852, daughter of George Doman and Elizabeth Holley (b. 1912, Calne). I do not have a confirmed female line back from here, but I believe it to be Sarah Godwin (b. 1783, Bremhill), Susannah Hunt (b. 1753, Bremhill) and Sarah Bodman (b.c. 1720). Has anyone else heard of this disease (or similar) being passed through their family? 1. Next week's Oxfordshire FHS (computer) meeting
    2. Hi Colleagues The next meeting of the Oxfordshire Family History Society will be a computer meeting to be held on Monday 5 December 2005 at Exeter Hall, Oxford Road, Kidlington, Oxford OX5 1AB. The doors will open at 7.15pm. The meeting will start at around 7.30pm. Unlike usual OFHS meetings, this evening will not feature a formal presentation, but will take the form of a workshop - a "Computer clinic" - at which members of the Computer Group Panel and others will help to solve the computing problems of those in attendance. It will be a little different, but at the same time will hopefully be both an enjoyable and informative evening. All members, potential members and their guests are welcome. Admission and car parking are totally free. For directions how to get there, please see :- http://www.ofhs.org.uk/ExeterHall.html For a list of future meetings of Oxfordshire FHS, please see :- http://www.ofhs.org.uk/meetings.html Any queries, please contact me off-list. 3. Chris, I read you posting and I agree. Pre-1800 records are hard to come by. I'm afraid I can't help you, but I did just want to say one thing (actually two). I was having no luck whatsoever. Then I found that my family, very unbeknownst to me, was at that time Quaker. And then I started digging in Quaker records. I have another branch that is Baptist. All I can say is that you might have to be willing to consider non-Conformist sources. I did, on the other hand, have some good luck with the SRO when I went to England in 1993 and 1995. Although there are some references on-line to their collection(s), a visit may be well worth it. Good luck! Michel in South Africa searching: any METFORD in Somerset, ELLIS of Uffculme-Devon, HULET of Street (all Quakers), and BADCOCK (Baptist in Devon). on 01/12/05 11:06, acp derrick at atsk26@dsl.pipex.com wrote: > I dont have any mysteries in my family tree, but what I do have is a lack of > time to do much research offline. > I have been looking for parish registers (births, marriages) for the areas > of Chard, Axbridge and Cheddar; online or on disks. > Unfortunately so far I have found nothing at all and am coming rapidly to > the conclusion that I will have to shelve much of my tree-tracing until I > have more time to get out and about, and visit Somerset Records Office. > Does anyone know if these have been produced in digital format? I have been looking for parish registers (births, marriages) for the areas of Chard, Axbridge and Cheddar; online or on disks. Unfortunately so far I have found nothing at all and am coming rapidly to the conclusion that I will have to shelve much of my tree-tracing until I have more time to get out and about, and visit Somerset Records Office. 3. Ok, now you have me going again. My husband's Elliot family left Devon for New England in 1662, Daniel and Dorcas Elliot. They were married in Ide in 1659. Daniel was born in 1636 in Moreton Hampstead in Devon. That is all I know, but would like to know more history of this area during the time of 1600-1660 and perhaps if possible of the Elliot family. Does anyone know of a book or reference area that I could look up on internet. I live in Nevada, USA. I do know that there were many people from this area that left for New England area, do you know from which port they all left? The next thing we know is that their son, Daniel, was born in Salem, Mass. but no word of them living in Salem area or of Daniel's death. One little note that Dorcas died 1680. Do you think Exeter would have some information? Linda Elliott Dr. Richard Elliott richard2196@earthlink.net EarthLink Revolves Around You.

    3. One of my problems is a certain Robert Penny of Preshute who married Mary Hutchins at Burbage 13th July 1767. He also seems to have married her sister Elizabeth at a later date. Robert and Mary of Preshute had a child who was baptised Mary at St Peter's, Marlborough 13th Oct 1768. Then there was a death of Mary Penny in November 1769 in the Burbage register and this could have been either mother or child. We have evidence of Robert being married to Elizabeth because of his will. Children born to Robert and Elizabeth are Mary (Maria) baptised at St Peter's Marlborough Jan 19th 1776 and Thomas who was baptised at Huish Oct 17 1773. We know that Mary and Elizabeth Hutchins were sisters and Elizabeth first married Robert Smith who died in 1771 so she was "available". We do not have a record of her marriage to Robert. It is illegal for a man to marry his late wife's sister but was it illegal then? Did it matter? Perhaps they just lived together? I have a similar case from the 1850s in my family where the man married one sister and then following her death, married the other younger one (was she prettier I wonder?). I understand (from a contributor on the Oxford list) that it was illegal until 1907 when the law was changed but that it is now permissible. Apparently it must have been a fairly frequent occurrence as according to my informant, the wording of the act states that people who married prior to the passing of the law would not be prosecuted. It looks like a matter of trying to straighten out and legalise a situation which was common enough. In the case of my forebears the second marriage took place in a different (city) parish where presumably the vicar did not know of the previous marriage (well that is my reading of the situation). However they did go back to the village to live so I can only guess that the vicar there and the rest of the locals turned a blind eye or were broad-minded - so much for straight-laced Victorian morality! :-) I am sorry, even though I have strong links with Preshute and Marlborough St Peter's, I can't help with your case of the 'bad penny' Steve, in damp Swindon

    3. Hello Jon, I hadn't thought of that. We haven't been able to find Mary's baptism certificate so you could be right that she has a middle name. Have been recently corresponding with someone on the Isle of Wight list and we discovered that in some censuses the wife of the person we were discussing was called Charlotte and in others Maria. Eventually found she was christened Charlotte Maria. I'm not saying these two incidents are related (despite name similarities) but fashions in names change over time, and maybe Mary preferred to be called Charlotte, perhaps it was her middle name and avoided confusion at Heale House. Just a thought.
