    2. Alfred Beard
    3. Hi Researchers. Could some kind person, check their 1851 and 1891 Census and see if they could locate William John or John SMITH born about 1838 and I belive his brother, Edwin William or William SMITH born about 1848 their names kept changing about on records found. They came from Wotton but one record for "John" had Chippenham, I am trying to find their parents and where they came from. I know it is a long shot, but every thing in genealogy is until it is proved. Wiltshire, Box, Wraxall could be another area. Alf beard

    3. Mary NEWCOMBE was born in Exbourne, Devon c 1777. She married Joseph SHOBROOKE in the parish church at Exbourne on 18 November 1817. Whilst I have a great deal of information on my SHOBBROOK (various spellings) forebears I know nothing more about Mary and her forebears. Thomas SHOBBROOK, son of Joseph and Mary married Ann QUICK in the parish church at Black Torrington on 20 April 1843. A Joseph NEWCOMBE was one of the witnesses. The 1851 census CD-ROM shows two Joseph NEWCOMBEs living in Exbourne; a father and son. Does anyone know if the elder Joseph was perhaps the brother of Mary SHOBROOKE (née NEWCOMBE), please? 3. Ohoh Looks like you may have landed yourself a gypsy family. Hawker occupations tend to be taken by gypsy orientated families. I've taken a look at the Hepzibah Non Conformist records for Wooton Basset and in fact the rest of Wiltshire and could not find anything on your names either under Barrett or Heath. Unless you're very lucky you may never find them. The remarriage is also a valid possibility depending on how old Julia was. I'll take a look and see if there is any marriages for Heaths or Barretts in and around Wooton Bassett on my next trawl of the fiches. ----Original Message Follows---- From: Maureen Jones <mjcorney@yahoo.com> To: WESSEX-PLUS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [WSX] Ancestor confusion - help! (long, but please bear with me) Date: Sat, 13 Jan 2001 18:50:35 -0800 (PST) Hello I am having a dickens of a time with my ancestors! My grandmother, Joan Burrows, born in 1924, met her grandmother (she died in 1930). She was always known as Grandma Clegg. No one in the family ever knew her first (or maiden) name. Well, we finally found out that my grandmother's cousin and his father's birth certificate, which listed the full name of the mysterious Grandma Clegg. It turns out that the name was Emily Sabina Barrett. Finally! We thought, some information! Not so... According to the 1881 census, Emily was working in Cardiff Wales as a waitress. The year of birth was about 1857, Wootton Bassett. We started to look for her birth registered, but couldn't find it. Her sister and presumed brother weren't registered either (Julia Susan and George). I know their parents' names - John and Sarah ? Today I was at my FHC and the parish records I had ordered were in. Thinking I would be in luck and find some proof that Emily, Julia and George existed, I attacked the records. Unfortunately, they weren't there. I searched a 20 yr period. This was the CoE, and Julia was married in a Weslyan chapel. I was about to broach the subject with my Mum when I saw something (it sounds corney, but my eyes were drawn to the spot...). It said - Julia Susan HEATH, born 1846 (my J.S. Barrett would have been born 1846/47), daughter of John and Sarah Heath. Father's profession was Hawker. My John Barrett's profession was shopkeeper about 30 years later. How common is the name Julia Susan, coupled with parents John and Sarah in the right year in the right place? I'm grasping at straws, but I'd like some thoughts on this. I will get around to ordering the Non-Conformist parish records for Wootton Bassett, but I'd like some ideas first. What to do? I'm wondering if Sarah _____ married John Heath and had Julia Susan Heath. John Heath died and Sarah re-married John Barrett. Julia changed her name to Barrett and Sarah and John #2 had at least two other children, Emily and George. It's possible isn't it? Taryn Jones Vancouver Island BC CANADA PS - I couldn't find BARRETT at all between 1842-1864 in Wootton Bassett on the parish records - what is going on? 1. [WSX] Stone, Gillingham - Wiltshire and Dorset
    2. Patricia Croteau
    3. Hello to all on the list, I have been stalled in my research of the STONE family and hope someone out there can help. I have found marriage of my gr.gr.gr.grandfather John STONE, to Ann GILLINGHAM in Bishop's transcripts for Cann, Dorset. The date is October 31, 1814. They were married by banns, with consent of all concerned,by George Wood, Rector. Both were listed as residing in this parish. There seems to be a distintion made as to "of" this parish and "residing in". Would this mean that they belonged to another parish? I can find no record of any baptism for Ann GILLINGHAM in this parish, although her birthplace was listed as Shaston, which I understand was another name for Cann.Would the actual parish register give more detail than the Bishop's transcript and would anyone be willing to look it up for me? It does not seem to be available through the LDS.Ann was born c.1785. I can find no baptisms of children until 1821 in Mere, Wiltshire. Was there a war during this time frame when John might have been away? Two more children Robert Gillingham STONE,c.1823 and Caroline Hawkins STONE,c.1827 were born in Donhead ST. Mary, then my gr.gr. grandfather Richard George Stone ,1829 again in Mere.Any help or hints on where to look next would be appreciated. 1. [WSX] New to List-Billing
    2. Hi everybody If anybody out there has any information on the following family I would be very happy to hear from you. William Billing b1818 Combe St Nicholas, Chard married Mary (possibly Hake) b1827 Buckland St Mary, Chard. Their children were William b1850 Combe St Nicholas, James b1851, Samuel b1852, Lydia b1854, John b1857 Chard, Thomas b1860. In the 1861 census they are living in Chard and Thomas's occupation is shown as "Blacksmith". I have been unable to find out who William's parents were or confirm Mary's maiden name and parents. My g g grandfather James was born in Chard and moved to Nottingham as did Samuel. In the 1891 census he is shown as aged 34 but this James would have been 39 or 40 if born in 1851. However, the SC index has no listing of a James Billing born in Som between 1850-2 but there is one in 1858. There are 2 possible John Billings born in 1857 so it doesn't look as if the names have been transposed. Was it common for ages in census returns to be so inaccurate or have I got a much bigger puzzle to solve? Sorry for bombarding you with all this information but I really need your help. 3. Colin Hunt asks: >Could someone who knows about these things tell me whether there is an sort of Marriage Index up and running for Wiltshire, please? And if so, whether it's accessible online. Also, I'd be interested to know whether the Chippenham registers have been transcribed onto the net. < There is one big marriage index, the Nimrod Index, and a variety of smaller indexes. I have put general information about all of them on the GENUKI Wiltshire page at http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/WIL/ under the topic "Church records". The Parish and Vital Records listing available in LDS Family History Centres shows the following Chippenham marriages as being in the IGI.( The first figures are a date range, the second a batch number, called a "project number" in this listing.) 1578-1611 M 5914-2 1653-1687 ditto? 1688-1753 M 5914-1 1754-1755 ditto? 1759-1866 M 5914-1 I think you have to enter these batch numbers as M059141 and M059142 in FamilySearch. Try M059143 as well - that appears in the TyeRoots on-line list of IGI batch numbers. In case you are not familiar with batch numbers - on the IGI search screen you can put in just a batch number and get all records in the batch (any surname). Or you can put in a batch number and a surname, and get all the matching records, just in that batch - i.e. in one parish, in a range of years. regards, David Hawgood. :

    1. [WSX] George Deacon and Frederick George Moss Deacon
    2. Jill Leslie
    3. Hi, thank you for the welcome. I am looking for George Deacon, builder, the adoptive father of Frederick George Moss Deacon. FGMD was born in London in 1850 and married in Bristol in 1875. His mother died in London in 1857. According to family tradition he was brought up in Bristol, went to Bath Grammar School while George Deacon was Clerk of the Works at Bath Abbey and when he left school was apprenticed to George Deacon. None of this has been confirmed. The Grammar School and the Abbey have few records. They were not in Bath in 1861 or 1871, as far as we can tell. I've checked some Kellys with no results and also the probate records, ditto. The 1861 and 1871 censuses look the best bet, at least until more indexing of the BDM is completed. Does anyone know of a Bristol index for those dates? Thanks for any help - Jill Leslie
