    1. [WSX] Military Questions Good Source of Information
    2. Alex Nicole
    3. Hello All, I've noticed that a number of people are asking questions about family members who served in the military. I have found the following groups to be very helpful in providing information on units and how to trace an individuals military records. In some cases with almost no information. The people involved seem very happy to help and have real passion for their subjects so they are well worth a try. They do not restrict themselves to only British Units despite the group title, British Regiments just happen to be their specialist subject. The Email addresses are as follows: britregiments@egroups.com <mailto:britregiments@egroups.com> GREATWAR-L@rootsweb.com <mailto:GREATWAR-L@rootsweb.com> Alex NICOLE

    3. Does anyone have access to the 1851 census for the Fordingbridge area. I have searched some parts of Hampshire, mainly Winchester, and want to move to the area between Winchester and Salisbury. I am looking for Mary HASKELL (widow) and her son Frederick James HASKELL born in 1839. They do not appear anywhere in Wiltshire. Mary came from Wiltshire and with the maiden name of WITT I am hoping to find them in this area. I have a gut feeling she may have remarried so am concentrating my research on Frederick James (he always put the two names together). Many thanks. 1. [WSX] My interests
    2. Hi Listers: I am looking for anyone researching any of my following ancestors: Isaac DAVIS (sometimes shown as DAVIES) He was a son of Rachel DAVIS who died in 1830 in Biddestone, Wiltshire Isaac--b. 1797 Biddestone, Wiltshire d. 1860 Brooklyn, New York USA Occupations: Labourer, maltster/brewer, operator of ferry between Bath and Twerton over the River Avon, and druggist. Am wondering if he was involved with The Davis Bear Brewery in Bath abt. 1840, and if there is a connection with the C. H. DAVIES drugstore in Twerton. Isaac married Hannah BOULTER in 1822 in Biddestone Hannah--b. approx. 1804 in either Pewsham, Wiltshire or Andover, Hampshire Hannah--d. 1885 Manitou, Colorado USA Isaac and Hannah moved to Bath after their marriage. They had as many as 12 children. Of them: 1. Mary Ann DAVIS--b. 1823 d. 1850 - drown in the River Avon, never married 2. Matilda DAVIS--b. 1825 d. 1825 3. Caroline DAVIS--b. 1826 d. 1880's married: Daniel CLISSOLD 4. Matthew DAVIS--b. 1828 d. 1894 married: Eliz. HEMBROUGH & M. LEAVES 5. Hannah Maria DAVIS-b.1830 d. 1914 married: John William JOHNSON 6. Matilta DAVIS-b. 1831 d. 1891 married Charles CROSS 7. Mark DAVIS-b. 1832 d. 1914 married: Harriet STEVENS & Maria ? 8. Isaac DAVIS-b. 1836 d. 1891 married: Sarah PEASE (dau. of John/Maria PEASE) 9. William Elijah DAVIS-b. 1838 never married date of death unknown, but after 1870 10., 11., 12., George, Thomas, and possibly Robert DAVIS--all died very young Isaac and Hannah left with 4 of their children (Matthew, Hannah, Matilda, and Isaac) in 1860 for the USA. Caroline CLISSOLD stayed in Bath, as did Willliam Elijah. Mark DAVIS left Bath in approx. 1885 for Carisbrook Austrailia. Might SKS Oz lister tell me where that is? Also, I've seen a lister with a GLS web page of immigrants to Oz, is there a similar thing for people coming from Somerset to Oz? Sorry to be so long, it's just Davis/Davies is such a common name that I thought I'd better go into some specifics. Would love to hear from and share info with anyone researching any of these people! 3. My Smith family moved around that general area having children in Broad Hinton 1690s-1840s to Lydiard/Wooton Basset in 1851, Cliffe Pypard in 1853, Broad Town in 1861/1871 and Swindon in 1881. My ancestor also was shown as born in Chippenham when in fact he was born in Cliffe Pypard 1859. I have the Wooton Basset 1851 census so I can take a look. I do recall a William born c1850 living there with his sister Elizabeth. It appears they may have been orphaned as they were not living with their parents. I have the Broad Hinton and Cliffe Pypard Baptisms and Burials so will take a look there also as well as the Wooton Basset parish records. ----Original Message Follows---- From: "Alfred Beard" <Costume@btinternet.com> To: WESSEX-PLUS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [WSX] CENSUS 1851 & 1891. Date: Sun, 14 Jan 2001 09:27:46 -0000 Hi Researchers. Could some kind person, check their 1851 and 1891 Census and see if they could locate William John or John SMITH born about 1838 and I belive his brother, Edwin William or William SMITH born about 1848 their names kept changing about on records found. They came from Wotton but one record for "John" had Chippenham, I am trying to find their parents and where they came from. I know it is a long shot, but every thing in genealogy is until it is proved. Wiltshire, Box, Wraxall could be another area. I can find no reference to a birth in the GRO. He was probably born about 1910 and he married Violet May Tucker (born 1912). This man is my son-in-laws grandfather and even his father does not know any history of Theodore Thomas Little. Where should I start looking and what might I be able to find out?
