    1. [WSX] Maryann GREEN
    2. Hello to the list, I am searching for info about one of my GGrandmothers and her parents and siblings. Maryann GREEN born abt. 1836 in Swallowcliffe, Wilts. She married Robert BUTT an arg. lab. from Ansty, Wilts. abt. 1857. They had seven children, the first born in 1858 and the last in 1876. My grandfather, William was born in 1864. The census for the years 1861 thru 1891 show the family living in Ansty. Hopefully someone can help me with info about Maryann and her parents etc. prior to 1861. I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance, Tony in Arizona, USA.

And d oes >Northcroft Lane still exist? >Researching Assuming you are referring to the village of Speen in Berkshire, perhaps better known in those days as Speenhamland and for its connections with the Poor Law, rather than the one in Bucks. Speen has now become a part of the urban sprawl, if you can call it that, for the market town of Newbury, and I can confirm that there is a Northcroft Lane in Newbury, which goes someway to connecting Speen to Newbury. If you have a look at the old-maps site at the following URL you will find an 1877 map for Speen: http://www.old-maps.co.uk/oldSite/10berk021/HTML/fs_02035001a.htm and then if you click to go to the map to the south which should be the following URL: http://www.old-maps.co.uk/oldSite/10berk021/HTML/fs_02043001m.htm you should find the Northcroft area of the village. On my modern map for the area Northcroft Lane is to the north of the Craven Road and North of the Kennet River which you can see on the second URL. Comparing the two maps I would guess that Northcroft Lane is in the area of the track that heads off across the area of land marked NORTH CROFT and that is noted as being liable to flooding. The main one is the market town of Newbury in what is now West Berks, see from: http://www.streetmap.co.uk/ but a quick look at the "old-map" site: http://www.old-maps.co.uk/welcome.htm indicates that there may be others in Kent, Somerset and Wiltshire, but I doubt that these can be much more than hamlets as they are not mentioned in my Cassells 1900 Gazetteer. 3. Hi Dorothy No Charles Edwards in the index who are noted as having seagoing or Bridgwater connections, although there are several Charles Edwards in East Somerset. And regret no Charlotte or Hannah Payne either as Gordon hasn't reached this part of the county yet. If you buy the CD Gordon sends you weekly up dates as he progresses through the census: you will then receive the data as soon as he completes that part of the film, although it may be a little while before he reaches that part of the county!
