    2. Cynthia Stiles
    3. Hello there I'm asking this lookup for a friend here in Bristol, who has recently become interested in his family history after hearing me talk about my efforts. I wonder if anyone has access to the 1851 or 1881 census records for Twyford, Berkshire and would be kind enough to see if a GILDING family is listed at those dates. I know it's probably a bit off-area but any information on them would be gratefully received. Thank you Cynthia Stiles

    1. [WSX] Somerset Brewery
    2. Hi everyone Strange one this but I'd be delighted if anyone can help. Is anybody researching, or knows of, a family probably from the Chard area, who owned a brewery in the mid to late 1800s? I have no idea what this family is called, but if you are and are missing a female called Sarah born in 1858/59, I've got her. I've no idea of her maiden name as I haven't tracked down her marriage cert yet. She married James Billing, a lacemaker, and moved to Nottingham. Sadly, she was disinherited for her choice of husband. What a mean lot, and to think I could have been a beer heiress by now! If anybody can help, I'd love to hear from you. Cheers Jo

    1. [WSX] HOLDER, TAINTON of GLS
    2. Kaye Purnell
    3. G'day Some new entries on my GLS Immigrants to Australia pre 1888 Index Ruth HOLDER born GLS arrived VIC 1855 aged 44 per "Caldera" as an unassisted immigrant. In 1856 she married James MURPHY in VIC; there were no chn, not surprising considering her age. They appeared to live in the Winchelsea area of VIC. Ruth died in 1878 when she was said to be aged 71, parents given as Thomas HOLDER and Sarah BILLET. Phillip TAINTON and his wife Jane nee BRINKWORTH and chn Harriet 18, Richard 16, Hannah 10, Eliza 6 and William 2 arrived 1841 "Burhampooter" (Sydney NSW) as Bounty Immigrants. They were Baptists and are mentioned in the Shortwood Emigrant List. Phillip became a member of the Church in 1816; and a member of the Shortwood Benefit Society in 1828 at age 31. According to a deacon's note in Oct 1836 he kept a beer house or public inn at Newmarket. He contributed 2 guineas to the building of the new meeting house in 1837-8. Jane became a member in 1830; she and Phillip were married at Horsley 30 Oct 1820. They were both removed from membership of the church in 1848. Phillip was bapt Horsley 22 Mar 1797; parents Richard TAINTON (a weaver dead in 1841) and Ursula nee ARNOLD (also dead in 1841). Jane said she was born c1802, the dau of William BRINKWORTH, a baker, and Esther (dead in 1841). Jane died shortly after arrival at Sydney in 1841. The family was in Victoria by 1849 when dau Hannah married James LUCAS; 9 chn. Widowed, Hannah married twice more. Son Richard married Eliza PERRETT in VIC 1851; 8 chn. Dau Eliza married John THOMPSON in 1853; 8 chn. Phillip TAINTON appears to have remarried Mary WILSON in 1854; Mary was aged about 47 and there were no chn. The family all lived in the Geelong area where Phillip was a milkman. Dau Harriet died unmarried in 1878, though she appears to have had an illegitimate dau Jane in 1863 who died in infancy. She is buried with her father Phillip who died 1875 aged 79. Any interest in the above; please note they are not my families; entries on my GLS Immigrants to Australia pre 1888 Index. Cheney CMB for 1653-1935, 1653-1947 & 1653-1876 respectively. I don't know of a Brasenrose College, Buscot, but there is certainly a Brasenose College (Sp), Oxford, which has been around for nearly 500 years: see: http://www.bnc.ox.ac.uk/ Perhaps it had an extension or something at Buscot? 1. [WSX] PRESS Thomas, gravestone, Easton-in-Gordano
    2. Ian and Jo Jeremiah
    3. Hi Listers, Yesterday, there was a rare spell of sunshine so we took a drive to visit Pill, Easton-in-Gordano and Portbury, places associated with my PRESS ancestors. The churchyard at Easton-in-Gordano has many old graves. Their inscriptions make for fascinating reading as a number of them record the deaths of Pill pilots and master mariners. I was extremely fortunate to find the grave of Thomas PRESS who died on 18th April 1836, aged 85 years. The gravestone also commemorated his son another Thomas PRESS and his daughter-in-law, Mary PRESS. Thomas PRESS, the son, died on 18th April 1845, aged 70 years while Mary, his wife, died on October 24th 1864, aged 83 years. The son and daughter-in-law may have been the Thomas PRESS and Mary HELLEN who were married on 19th October 1801 at St James, Bristol. (HELLEN is a surname, which has associations with St. Georges/Easton-in-Gordano.) I have 1841, 1851 and 1881 census information on my PRESS family and 1830-1841 PRESS baptisms from the Easton-in-Gordano parish registers. Some of the census information and the baptism information has been courtesy of kind listers. If anyone has access to parish registers for any earlier baptism, marriage or burial information for PRESS at Easton-in-Gordano or Portbury I would be very pleased to receive it. 3. Alf, Essential reading: "My Ancestor was a Merchant Seaman" by Chris & Michael WATTS. There are masses of information at the PRO, but you will need this book to be able to make use of it.
