    1. [WSX] GATCUM and variants
    2. Hello everyone I am a new subscriber to Wessex (just 'crossed-over' from the Hampshire list !!). I'm researching the GATCUM family (and variants) and have so far, traced them back to: Richard GADCOMBE Date of birth unknown (circa 1727?) , but his indenture papers state that he was the son of Richard of Chilbolton. I can't find a baptism for Richard, but there is a record of a baptism in Chilbolton on 6 January 1729 or 1730, for William GADCOMBE, son of Richard Gadcombe. (Could this have been Richard's brother??) Richard GADCOMBE was an indentured apprentice to John SHORT, of Newton Stacey in the Parish of Barton Stacey in October 1743, to learn the craft of Wheelwright. The full period (7 years) was served and Richard came to Farnham in Surrey. (He Anne FIGGE in Farnham on 22 December 1751). Any connections out there?? Regards Joy Waters

Hi Ian, Yes, I know it. It was reprinted in 1991, ISBN 0 9514320 0 1. It used to be obtainable from the author and possibly from the Cleeve Prior Stores, which is pictured on the cover. However, the author may have moved on as I think I saw her house up for sale a while back. Also the stores may have closed down as there was something about that in the local paper -- again a while back. I can't remember the price but I know it was reasonable. It may have been round about 5 or 6 pounds but certainly less than 10 pounds. Anyway, what do you want to know about Cleeve Prior? Let me know off list as I don't think the Wessex list encompasses Worcestershire, too. 3. Sheila, best approached in two parts : 1. Living. Effectively the monies that go with the appointment of a parish priest The Church of England has investments and large land and property holdings, thus deriving monies to pay the parish priests. (This is a very simple version of the whole truth) 2. Gift An example of the almost but not quite dead power system that exists in England Rather like Animal Farm, all parishes are equal but some are more equal than others The power to appoint a parish priest did not always lie with a central authority. Some powers resided elsewhere in the power base. The appointment was called a gift. Sometimes they were a gift indeed as some parishes were individually endowed with some quite large monies. . One of my ancestors was Rector at Winkfield for more than 40 years. The power to appoint the Vicar was, I believe, in the hands of an Oxford college. My ancestor did have the glebe lands, however, to provide his family with food. Regards REB
