Hi Another first time writer. I am researching a number of families in eastern Dorset. The main ones being :- Froud* Read* Gilbert* Jacobs Preston Amey and Sturney For most the trail goes back to at least the 1800's with those with a * being earlier than that. The villages in question are in the Horton, Woodlands, Witchampton and Gussage area to the south of Cranborne Chase. if anyone else is looking for these families I would be intersted to hear from you. Hi Listers, First I'd like to thank fellow rebel Hampshire listers for pointing me to this list. I didn't realize it would pertain to my research, but it does. My father was stationed in Trowbridge Wiltshire in WWII. Is there anyone who knows where I can look for information as to the base, etc.? Thank you. Hello list! Just discovered that my ggg grandparents were from Devon and Southampton yesterday. Sometime prior to 1846, Eliza Turner from Southampton and James Clegg from Colyton Devon moved to the Channel Islands. They were married in 1846 and had about 8 children there. James Clegg was a smith in 1846, as was his father, another James Clegg. Eliza's father, William Turner, was a gardener. James Clegg the younger was born about 1825 and Eliza Turner was born about 1824. One of James and Eliza's sons, Walter Sidney Clegg, 'married' (We think!) Emily Sabina Barrett from Wootton Bassett Wiltshire. In 1881, both were listed as unmarried living in Cardiff. Walter was living with who we think was Emily's mother, sister, brother and brother-in-law. Emily was working/living at the Great Western Hotel. Their eldest son, Sidney Clegg, was born October of 1881. Anyone know these people? My wife's grandmother was Elizabeth Florence (or Florence Elizabeth) BUTLER. She was born in 1881 after the census was taken. Her parents were Joseph BUTLER, born 1849 Salisbury, Wilts and Emilie born 1853 Lambeth, Surrey. The 1881 census shows Joseph and Emilie and sons Frederick and George (both born Lambeth) and Joseph born 1880 Ryde IOW. They lived at this time at 14 Warwick Street, Ryde. Joseph was a steam crane driver. I would appreciate any info on this family. Thanks Paul
My gg grandmother was Jane PRICKTOE born Newnham, Hants c. 1836 - 1840. I believe her parents were Richard, born 1799 in Andover, Hants and Jane (nee HURST) married 1834 at Knights Enham, Hants. I woudl appreciate any help with this family. Thanks Paul
Hi, I'm a new lister to this group. I'm originally from Surrey but for the past 9 years am living in L.A. Unfortunately I didn't take up genealogy until I moved here and although of course there are some things here that are better (more than just the weather) I envy all you Brits being able to so much research there - although I am indebted to LDS, for their resources - I visit fairly regularly their library. I do subscribe also to a number of other mailing lists, mainly in the South. My research for this group is as follows:- BROOMFIELD I have had major problems tracking the birth of my g grandmother Agnes BROOMFIELD. As is common I have a mixture of possible dates. In the 1881 census she was 30 and born in Bishopstoke, Hampshire. At her 1882 marriage she had shed 5 years 26 years old. Father Charles, blacksmith. From the 1851 census I have Charles BROOMFIELD, 23, blacksmith born Owlesbury. Wife Ann born Owlesbury plus children Mary Ann, 7 and William 2. I got what I though were birth certs for Agnes and marriage for Charles and Ann. On the birth it states Charles occ. as Inn keeper and on the marriage occ. as engineer. It does show Ann (nee FOSTER) living in Bishopstoke. Any info on these names would be gratefully received. This email is getting a bit long so will send another with other research. Paul

As another of the HantsRebels I too would like to mention my interests. From Kingsclere, Hants but with 'emigrants' to Berkshire and Surrey. COOPER (my Grandfther's surname) with special reference to any FOSTER links as due to one of those odd quirks we get in families, involving out of wedlock births, the Cooper Family name should have been Foster. I would love to find links to any Coopers living in Kingsclere area prior to the marriage of Richard Cooper and Judith BUXEY in 1786 FISHER, (my gt-grandmother's surname) The Cooper marriages include BUCKLAND, BUTLER, BUXEY, FROUD, GIRDLER, HAWKINS, JEWEL, SIMS and STINCHCOMBE to mention but a few. I think all the Kingsclere/Kingsclere Woodlands families are inter-related My particular branch of the Coopers seem to have been in Ashford Hill for quite a few generations, but several ended up in Ecchinswell working for the Kingsmill Estate. A Girdler marriage took us over to Highclere where that branch are still farmers and from that family came the most recent marriage to a Butler, a gamekeeper at Yattenden for many years. I would also like to track down any children of the Cooper Uncles who moved to Farnborough and Epsom. To end this long screed I have to include my grandmother's family name of BARKER, there are many Barker families around Hazely Heath, Heckfield, Crondal, Mattingley area of Hampshire. but finding a link between them to see if they are all the same family is my next aim. -- John Lewis <jayell@cwcom.net> from Bournemouth, Dorset, UK using Mandrake 7.2 GNU/Linux and Geneweb genealogy software Main Family Names in HAM are: Kingsclere area: BUTLER, COOPER, FISHER, FOSTER Hazeley Heath: BARKER

Dear Listers, I do wonder if anyone is researching the CHIVERTON family. I am reliably informed that GtGTAunt Georgina Burrows (b Tichbourne 1875) married an ALFRED CHIVERTON. I have checked the LDS 1881 census and it shows 4 Alf CHIVERTONS, all from the IOW. I would be pleased to hear from anyone researching that IOW family. I would be pleased if SKS could look up on the 1871 and 1891 census for The BURROWS family at TICHBORNE HANTS, I will re-imburse for photocopys of census entrys.
