Neither Wadwick or Warwick, Hants is listed in Cassell's Gazetteer c 1900, but 'tis certainly there on the map, however Wadwick appears to be missing from where it should be and Warwick stands in its place! Having written to Carol and said I've found your Warwick the thought occurs to me - have I found Warwick which is really Wadwick ie an error in the Ordnance Survey map or are these alternative names - or what? If anyone has an OS map of the area in the middle of Andover, Newbury, Basingstoke, Whitchurch and can identify farms and hamlets in the Binley, Egbury, Lichfield triangle I should be most grateful if little light could be shone on the conundrum? I've added the TILBURY surname extracted from the Kelly's 1900 Portsmouth Directory. (In addition to Tisbury's found in Stevens 1887, Chamberlain's 1887-88 and Kelly's 1894 directories.) http://www.tilburyweb.com/index.htm ==== Steve Tilbury tilbste@home.com Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

Hello Janet, I have ROSEBLADE's in Latton, Wilts if thats of any interest (just south of the Glos. border). Also, I have interest in any MASON's that come from either Vernhams Dean, Hampshire, pre-1820, or Wexcombe or Tidcombe, Wilts. There were huge amounts of them born in the area, but they all disappeared... some to Glos (my line), some to London, and the others... I'm still trying to find out. Nivard Ovington says he has an Ellen A YOELL aged 70 in 1881 born Portsea, living at 8 Landport Terrace, Portsea (also Isabella & Amelia) and says the family are tailors, Jewellers & Silversmiths There are some coincidences with my family. Louisa Weller YOULL was born in 1805 in Southwark, Surrey, and married Samuel HAWGOOD. Samuel was a pawnbroker in trade directories, a jeweller or silversmith on the birth certificates of his children. Samuel's brother Samuel Thomas HAWGOOD went to live in Portsea, and married Mary Anne Dabbs there in 1827. Samuel Thomas ran the Red House Tavern in Church Road, Landport, and he had two children who ended up in the pawnbroking/silversmith business in Portsea (a bit later they call themselves Investment Bankers!) Louisa Weller YOULL's father was William YOULL, a butcher of Dover Place, Old Kent Road, Southwark - he is in trade directories there from 1805-1844. His will was proved at Canterbury in August 1845 and from this and the IGI I know of wife Mary and children John Robert, Louisa Weller, Ann, Eliza, William Finnerby, Jane, Emely, Emma - surnames appear as YOUL or YOULL in different documents, they were born 1803 to 1817. I have never followed up this YOULL family, but the silversmith/Portsea connection is striking. regards, David Hawgood. email hawgood@one-name.org
Margaret Whilst I'm sure there are folk here on the Wessex List who will try to help you, if you haven't done so already, you might also like to try the Wiltshire List where there are also some very helpful list members: John Fuller's site at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail_country-unk.html has this to say about the list: >WILTSHIRE-EMI. A mailing list for the discussion and sharing of information regarding emigrants from the county of Wiltshire, England to anywhere in the world in any timeframe. To subscribe send "subscribe" to wiltshire-emi-l-request@rootsweb.com (mail mode) or wiltshire-emi-d-request@rootsweb.com (digest mode). Whilst the prime aim of the site is emigrants they also help other researchers and I am aware that there is at least one very knowledgeable lady who "might" be able to help you? There is nothing prior to 1801 for any parishes in Hants. Regards Paul Portland
I know census look-ups can be tedious, but I am anxious to locate any BULLs in the Allington/ Newton Toney area of Wilts in 1861. Stephen BULL was b 7 May 1861 in Allington (the one near Amesbury not Devizes) and when baptised on 19 May 1861 in Newton Toney, his parents gave an address of a Gypsy camp on nearby Tarrow Hill. TIA Ernie Bull Bristol, UK.
I am trying to find any information on a George Edgar Deacon and his wife Jane who lived at Castle Street, Aldboune, Wilts in 1926. (They may have lived there long before that but the electoral roll gives them there in 1926 - I haven't checked earlier ). I believe they had a son Theodore, but also believe they adopted two more boys with surname of LITTLE who were born in the Hungerford Work House. in 1903 and 1905. I am trying to find the history of my son-in-laws grandparents. Please can anyone help? Mary

Hi all I posted regarding my YOELLs connection earlier and wondered what the availability of early census records was for Portsea / Portsmouth Is it possible that there was a concientious scribe in these area's taking early census?? as I know that in isolated pockets around the country there are "some" early census with names taken ( knowing my luck, I doubt it !! <g> ) Best wishes Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (born Leicestershire)
No connection, but how does one find out indentured apprentices? Thank you, Rosemary Barbour

Dear all I am seeking help looking for YOELLs of Portsea / Portmouth I have an Ellen A YOELL aged 70 in 1881 born Portsea, living at 8 Landport Terrace, Portsea Isabella born 1806 Portsea ( died 1874 ) Amelia born 1787 Portsea ( died 1875 ) It has been suggested that the YOELL could have been an Anglicising of a Jewish name such as JOELL ( or similar ) The family are tailors, Jewellers & Silversmiths, also as Portsmouth was a large port it could be where they landed, possibly to escape persecution? Does anyone have any early trade directories that may list any YOELLs ?
