For questions about this list, contact the list administrator at ISLE-OF-WIGHT-admin@rootsweb.com. I should like to thank Jon for drawing my attention to this error and omission. 3. For those who don't receive Dick Eastman's weekly Genealogy Newsletter the following might have a Wessex flavour: he gives details for the new National Burial Index which can be seen at: http://www.twrcomputing.co.uk/nbi.htm The CDs are said to include more than 5.3 million burials in England and Wales from 1538 onwards. The blurb on the site suggests that Wessex counties will be represented as follows: Berkshire 51000, Dorset 1000, Gloucestershire 151000, Oxfordshire 256000 and Wiltshire 146000 See the site for more details, price and how to order etc. Dick also states that he has been advised that 125 million new records have been added to the IGI: I know no more than this! 1. [WSX] Hampshire Lists
    2. Paul Benyon
    3. Apologies to non-Hampshire researchers - if you are in this category - best delete this message now! Right! This is addressed to those researching in Hampshire or who may find themselves with a Hants rellie in the future: I've recently been asked to advertise a new list for Hampshire! However, I see that yet another new one has also appeared on the scene in the last day or so! This makes 5 lists (including this one) that cover the county in question! In the interest of fairness to those carrying out research, which after all is what these lists are about, I propose to mention ALL the lists that I am aware of that claim to be able to help those with Hants interests. Researchers will then have to make up their own minds which best suits their purpose? At the end of the day a visit to each may be your only way of deciding! I'm deliberately ignoring those who may have a difficulty with this!!! The list, which is in alphabetical order, is as follows: the info given has been copied from the appropriate Rootsweb List page, except in the case where I've been asked to give the list a mention: ENG-HAMPSHIRE: For questions about this list, contact the list administrator at ENG-HAMPSHIRE-admin@rootsweb.com HAMPSHIRE: Topic: the county of Hampshire. For questions about this list, contact the list administrator at HAMPSHIRE-admin@rootsweb.com HAMPSHIRE-LIFE: This site is to look at any aspect of Hampshire History and members may also enquire about genealogical and historical software problems, books, CDs, folklore and any other topic concerned with the history of the county. For questions about this list, contact the list administrator at HAMPSHIRE-LIFE-admin@rootsweb.com SUSSEX-PLUS: Topic: A mailing list for anyone with a genealogical or historical interest in the county of Sussex and the adjacent counties of Surrey, Kent and Hampshire. For questions about this list, contact the list administrator at SUSSEX-PLUS-admin@rootsweb.com WESSEX-PLUS: Topic: anyone who has an interest in genealogy and local history related to the following counties: Berkshire, Bristol, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Isle of Wight, Hampshire, Oxfordshire, Somerset, and Wiltshire I should be grateful if list members who have queries or something to say on the subject responded to me direct: I feel that more than enough has been said on this subject in another place! So in fairness to other list members who have no interest in this subject whatsoever I should like take this opportunity to declare the subject closed! Paul Benyon Isle of Portland Wessex List Owner

    2. Joe & Audrey Sandey
    3. Forwarded: Dear Listers, I am researching my 3xG.Grandfather, he was a JOHN LANGFORD a BLACKSMITH, who married his 2nd wife a MARY ANN TRUEMAN in CHARD on 28.8.1826, having been born himself in 1780 he was many years older than her. They moved to JERSEY in the CHANNEL ISLANDS before the 1841 Census. (he may have had a daughter called SUSAN by his 1st wife). I have copies of all the Census concerned but I am looking for his Birth place. Are there any Pigots/Kellys etc that would cover CHARD and its surrounding area before 1841??. Has anyone heard of this family or has it in their Family Tree please? Regards Audrey in King's Lynn

    3. I am trying to trace my gr.grandfather Thomas WILCOX. The 1881 census of Cardiff,Wales shows his birthplace as Stogumber, Somerset,c.1844. I have tried the parish register for Stogumber but cannot find his baptism.Would anyone be willing to do a look-up for him on the 1851 census of Stogumber? He would be about 7yrs. old.I have been told that his father was a squire. 1881 census for Somerset show WILCOXs in Woodlands, Lilstock, Stringston and Stogursey, none in Stogumber, although I know that his father was still alive then.I would be glad to hear from anyone researching WILCOX in Somerset and any help would be appreciated. 1. [WSX] MORRIS in N. E. Dorset.
    2. Dear Jean, This is a remote chance, but I have the note of a marriage between one of my earliest traceable relations, Joseph PARSONS and Mary MORRIS, of Donhead St. Mary, Wiltshire. This wedding occurred at Sixpenny Handley, Dorset on February 1st, 1795. Joseph was the younger brother of my 3xgt. grandfather, John Parsons and he was baptised on May 16th, 1769. In the Handley registers, there are two children's baptisms of Joseph and Mary's marriage, Jane Parsons, baptised April 19th, 1795 (that was cutting things rather fine!) and Sarah Parsons, baptised November, 25th, 1796. Under burials, there is a Joseph Parsons (is he Mary's husband?) and, on May 19th, 1799, there is a marriage of Mary PARSONS to William ELLETT. (This could be the same lady.) The registers at Handley for this period give only the scantiest details of the participants. If this lady should connect with your researches, I would be grateful for any information which you might have about her and her family. Although she is clearly not on my direct line, I find that the branches can be just as interesting! Best wishes for happy hunting! Iain Parsons, in Brampton, Cumbria, UK.
