    1. [WSX] GLS Will: GAZARD, HILLIER, NICHOLLS
    2. Kaye Purnell
    3. G'day This is one of the wills I had success with from the GLS R O site http://www.gloscc.gov.uk/pubserv/gcc/corpserv/archives/genealogy.htm (please note I have included the site this time!) The will of Samuel GAZZARD of Dunkirk Minchinhampton who died 1843. Basically he leaves things in trust for his wife Mary during her life time and then everything to be sold and divided evenly between son John GAZARD (mason), son Samuel GAZARD, sons in law John GARDNER and Nathaniel HILLIER and grandson Charles NICHOLLS. Died the day after he made the will 10 Feb 1843 - made a cross (because of illness?) Witnessed by Isaac WAKEFIELD and Isaac CHANDLER who could both write (after a fashion). I tried to put together the family that was on the 1851 census from this; started with Nathaniel HILLIER as he was easiest Minchinhampton 1851 census SECTION V All that part of the Parish of Minchinhampton called Theescombe Division lying to the South of the Road from Hampton Common to Little Britain and to the West or Lower side of the Road from Littleworth to Nailsworth passing Dunkirk House, including the Old Lodge, Theescombe, Little Brittain, Dyehouse, Mills-Culver House, Dunkirk Mills. With my version of the 1851 census index (although not really suited to such a task) it does not appear to me that there are John and Mary GARDNER however spelled who are old enough living together in 1851, at least not in Minch or any of the obvious surrounding parishes or in Painswick. There are only 2 bapts for John and Mary GARDNER in Painswick on the IGI . Mary Anne GARDNER - International Genealogical Index Gender: F Christening: 18 May 1817 Painswick, Gloucester, England 2. Grandson Charles NICHOLLS; well if you assume that he didn’t go to NSW (with the rest of his family - George and Hannah NICHOLLS, sibs Eliza, Elizabeth, Isaiah, Ellen in 1839) because he had better things to do Charles NICHOLLS Sex: M Marriage(s): Spouse: Deborah ALDER Marriage: 28 Jul 1839 Horsley, Gloucester, England ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Source Information: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Batch number: Dates Source Call No. Type Printout Call No. Type M018101 1733-1754 0425442, 0019528 Film 6911586 Film M018101 1754-1881 0091529 Film NONE Sheet: That made me look closely at this entry Horsley 1851 census 59 ALDER Samuel 75 Shearer King Stanley Fanny 74 Lime Carrier King Stanley Susannah 22 Lime Carrier Horsley Robert Grandson 20 Cloth Worker Horsley NICHOLLS Charles Grandson 3 Cheltenham and then find the family Cheltenham 18 1851 census 74 NICHOLLS Deborah 30 Monthly Nurse Horsley George 1 Cheltenham SIMS John nurse child 9m Cheltenham No sign of Charles although it does not say whether Deborah is widowed or married. If anyone is interested in this family I can put them in touch with Peter Proctor of ACT Australia who is an eminent GAZARD researcher and a descendant of this family. Samuel GAZARD's wife is regarded as being nee SMITH. My own connection to this line is somewhat dubious; I descend from Susannah GAZARD bc1780 who was living Minchinhampton when she married William JEFFRIES Horsley 8 Apr 1805. The relationship is unknown, but as the family witnessed each other's marriages, and JEFFRIES chn sailed on the boat to NSW in 1841 as other GAZZARD descendants, some relationship is assumed. Because truth is stranger than fiction I received an enquiry today for my index of GLS born people who arrived Australia pre 1888 for Mary Ann HILLIER dau of Nathaniel, who married George GLASTONBURY (GLASSENBURY - father Philip, another Horsley bloke) in South Australia in 1858. Mary Ann is the dau aged 20 on the 1851 census; her brother Nathaniel aged 17 also came to South Australia and married Hannah RICKARDS (father Daniel another Minch lady) there in 1866. Any interest in these families? Regards Kaye Kaye Purnell <kayepur@ozemail.com.au> Ancestors from GLS who came to Oz? Database kept on GLS arrivals to AUS pre 1888. 3. If anyone has started looking into this then another name that has been linked to this name is BURRY who have been residents in Wiltshire as early as 1584. My Burry ancestors were James Burry and his wife Susannah Swanborough originally from Stert, Wiltshire and then moved to All Cannings, Wiltshire. There are Burry's in the All Cannings records on my site www.swangen.co.uk if anyone wishes to look at it. The 1881 census shows a BERRY/BURRY family which I think was linked to my Burrys. ----Original Message Follows---- From: "isobel newman" <teramahome@optusnet.com.au> (via Paul Benyon <pbtyc@netscapeonline.co.uk>) Reply-To: teramahome@optusnet.com.au To: WESSEX-PLUS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [WSX] (fwd) BERRY FAMILY WILTSHIRE Date: Thu, 15 Feb 2001 10:32:08 +0000 Forwarded: From: "isobel newman" <teramahome@optusnet.com.au> please can u help in finding more about Robert Berry b.abt1592 London.(LDS pedigree chart). 1. [WSX] List Admin
    2. Paul Benyon
    3. Certain new lists members are sending details of their sites and others to the list every other day or so. This practice is not encouraged and I shall be monitoring the mail of those concerned in future! As it states in your welcome notes the Wessex-Plus List is a discussion area for anyone who has an interest in genealogy or local history related to the Wessex area. It is not a noticeboard! A monthly mention of your site on the list should be more than adequate. You should remember that this list covers 10 counties and the continued mention of one name or one county can become very irritating for other list members and can have the opposite effect to that desired! If you have any comments to make please send them to me off-list! Paul Benyon Wessex List Moderator

    3. Hello Would anyone know if there are "Wells Parish" or "Wells St Cuthbert" Parish Records through the LDS. I have looked and the following is all that I could come up with. The Somerset Archives site lists parish records, so I guess they must exist. Has anyone on this list ordered Wells Parish records? The records I am looking for would be Church Of England. The ones below look like they are for a Independent Chapel. This is all that I could find listed through the LDS. Any suggestions would help. 3. Hello Everyone, Could one of our military experts advise if knowing a person was in the Royal Artillery during the 1870's to about 1891 would be enough to obtain a copy of the personnel/service records from the PRO at all? The person we are looking for is John Walter SHIRLEY who was a corporal and he managed to dodge the 1881 census and then was not at home in the 1891 census at Saltash, Cornwall where his family lived. We need to find the army records as we have been unable to find the marriage in the GRO indexes under any variation of the name for himself or his wife. We need to find either the marriage certificate or obtain the amry records to find out who the parents were for these two. As it sounds as though you really want the service documents so that you can find details of his marriage and his parents: perhaps you should first of all explore the series of GRO fiche in respect of Births, Marriages and Deaths for H.M. Forces, unless you've already been this avenue: these relate to births, marriages and deaths among members of H.M. Forces and certain other persons working for or attached to H.M. Forces. Entries in the Army Registers appear to date primarily from 1881, although some records are known to go back as far as 1761. May or may not include you man, but if he's not in the regular GRO fiche it may be worth a try. I understand that these are available at the Family Records Centre at: 1 Myddelton Street London EC1R 1UW see: http://www.pro.gov.uk/about/frc/contact.htm I don't know anywhere else that has a copy of these records and can find no trace of the LDS holding them? Perhaps someone else may know? I would have thought that a set of these fiche might have reached your part of the World by now? Perhaps the FRC may know? On to things Army: The chances of finding information that has been archived at the PRO depends in part on the length of the soldier's service. If he completed pensionable service or otherwise gained a pension the chances are usually far higher and from the dates you supply it would appear that he may well have completed pensionable service. The Army: Soldiers' Pensions, 1702-1913 Military Records Information Leaflet No 6 which can be found at: http://www.pro.gov.uk/leaflets/ri2006.htm explains where to find the information. Royal Artillery pensions come under WO 116/125-185, but if he isn't included in these then WO 97 is the main series of records for long service soldiers and survive for most men discharged between 1882-1913. documents are listed alphabetically for all soldiers who completed an Army career, and not just those discharged to pension. They are said to contain a wonderful supply of information about the soldier and his career. But what information they would provide that would help you regarding his Next of Kin, I'm not sure: I would guess that his parents details would have been removed or erased once he married and changed his next of kin, but I could be wrong? Can anyone with experience here advise? Unless you're planning a holiday over here you would need to employ a researcher so see: http://www.pro.gov.uk/readers/independent.htm for details. Best of luck in your research Roger and would love to know how it pans out? Regards Paul Portland
