    1. [WSX] PARSONS - Laverton, Somerset 1758-ish
    2. Dave Rossiter
    3. Hi Lists, Can anyone help me with the marriage of Joshusa PARSONS and Prudence ? sometime around 1758. Joshua was the son of James and Eleanor PARSONS of Laverton in Somerset and was baptised in Feb 1723. Joshua and his wife Prudence baptised a number of children in Laverton for 1761 onwards :- Betty 1761 Joseph 1763 William 1765 Sarah 1767 Henry 1768 Ann 1769 Prudence 1771 Joshua 1773 Unfortunately Joshua and Prudence did not marry in Laverton and I believe did not baptise their first child Eleanor there either. The question is - Where? So if any one has come across the marriage of Joshua PARSONS and Prudence ? around 1758-60 - somewhere moderately near to Laverton. I'd be very pleased to hear from you. All the best Dave Rossiter

    1. [WSX] Re: Wells Parish Records & "Printouts"
    2. David Armstrong
    3. A "Parish Register Printout" or "Computer Printout" is the information extracted by the LDS extraction teams for inclusion on the IGI. The description of the films will inform you of which microfilm number the information has been extracted. The only advantage you get from these films is that the information is typed, and therefore easy to read, as well as confined to the one Parish. However, all the extra bits and pieces of information recorded by the Parish Priest, such as residence, occupation, additional family relationships etc is omitted. Therefore I discourage people from ordering these films. A message that you sent could not be delivered to all of its recipients:- ________________________________________________________________________ -----Original Message----- From: Rodney WHALE Sent: 16 February 2001 This is Rodney WHALE. You will recall we corresponded last year following your letter to my wife, yet another EARWAKER descendant.I have only recently joined your mailing list having more or less got the hang of my new computer. Firstly may I congratulate you on setting up the group, it is a super method of contact and of being able to offer assistance when possible. May I also say how much I was impressed by the website and also your contribution to the Hampshire (Lists and) Villages webpages. The list might be interested to know that I have the whole 1851 census for Hampshire as well as the National one for 1881. I also have details of all pre 1858 wills for Hampshire, details of all existing Hampshire marriage licences from 1689 to 1837, plus my own copies of fiches of Privett and West Meon Parish Registers. I am always willing to help anybody with any query if I am able to do so. Tomorrow Beryl and I are going to Alton to attend a regional seminar organised by GOONS. If you have any specific queries about the organisation and can get them to me tonight I will try and get answers. Can I turn to the query about the Antiques Roadshow last Sunday. I have it on tape and the item concerned was a Damascan cigarette case which had the mark of Komah on it, he according to the expert being a Japanese maker of fine quality gold and silver inlay. I think the man who had taken it for examination was an EARWAKER because he said it had been purchased by his father who had been a member of the Royal Naval air mission that had been to Japan in 1922/3 repairing wooden planes. There was a receipt with the case dated 8th December 1923 from O.Komai and was made out to W.A.EARWAKER. The expert valued the item at 800 GBpounds to 1000 GBpounds. The owner was aged about 65 and bearded and that part of the programme had been recorded in Birmingham. I am pleased you have taken up my suggestion to try and get a copy of the book West Meon- Some Chapters in its History. You will have noticed on page 19 the reference to the EARWAKER tomb. Over recent years Beryl and I have spent a lot of time trying to find traces of it but have failed. You posted a query re the location in Hampshire of your ggGrandfather James (born 1809). I suspect from our phone conversation that he was then in London? bearing in mind your Hampshire connection, is there a chance it could COSham or FAREham? There was a message 8th February from Colin EARWAKER who appears to be in the north of England. Could I mention that a John EARWAKER migrated from West Meon in 1800's to Manchester where he became a prosperous cotton manufacturer and was the father of John Parsons EARWAKER (1847 to 1895) who was an eminent genealogist of Lancashire and Cheshire families. The Manchester Family History Society gives an annual prize to the author of the best article published in the Manchester Genealogist. Perhaps Colin connects with that branch of the family? On 7th February there was a message from Benjamin SKEATES in which he gave details of some Hampshire 1851 census entries. The Nicholas who was at Crawley is one on my wife's line and we have photographs of him and his wife. I don't know what Susan who raised the original query was asking as it was before I joined your list. Parents of Nicholas were James EARWAKER and Ann WEBB. The WIELD family with head being John EARWAKER were part of the prosperous farming part of the family and one of the commemorative pictures in the village church is in memory of John Mabberly(Sic?) EARWAKER, a very devout churchman who was churchwarden for 37 years who died in 1917 and was a considerable farmer. He lived at Wield House. Benjamin, in his message, mentioned a Nicholas in Alton, who was aged 22. I have never yet found his origin and I suspect he may be another entry for the first one mentioned. The census film for Alton shows him as a visitor at the White Horse in Alton High Street. I think Benjamin got his information from H.G.S. transcript of the census. The transcript appears wrong in relation to John aged 43 because when the film is examined the original age has been crossed out and 35 has been written above it. Keep up the good work, Rodney WHALE.

    1. [WSX] Notley family of the Wessex region
    2. Good evening. I am new to your list. For family reasons the Dorset TRENCHARD's particularly interest me. However to date, I have been unsuccessful in tracing the strong link which connected the Trenchard and NOTLEY families. I presume it was a 19th. century marriage, but cannot trace the event. I will guess that whatever brought these two families together, it took place within West & North Dorset - Southampton - Bristol - South Somerset. I have several items of hand written NOTLEY material with the following signatures. Charles Notley[1799], William Notley["1867 at Batcombe], William Notley ["born 1840"] F.J. Notley[1878]. In spite of these pointers I have not been able to plot these Notleys within a family group which links to the Trenchards. Ideas, clues and help will be appreciated. Alec Palmer. 1. [WSX] CHESTERMAN - Oxon - Glocs borders
    2. Dave Rossiter
    3. Hi All, I wonder if anyone has come across the baptism of Mary Ann CHESTERMAN - some time between about 1802 and 1806. Mary Ann married William Harris in Burford, Oxon in October 1824. This marriage had eluded me until recently and now I 'Think' I have added a further three or four generations - but Mary Ann's baptism would be the confirmation. The theory goes like this (all information obtained from IGI extracted records but the details haven't been checked yet.) Isaac CHESTERMAN (from South Cerney, Glocs) was married to Mary TURNER in Cirencester, Glocs in 1800. They had two children - William (1800) and Hannah(1802) in Lechlade, Glocs before turning up in Burford, Oxon in 1814 when their daughter Eleanor was baptised. I suspect that Mary Ann was one of their children baptised in the 'Wilderness Years' where I can't find them. I have a feeling that the William CHESTERMAN who, with his wife Harriet, baptised Charles (1820), Caroline (1823) and Caleb C (1828) in Burford, Oxon was also the son of Isaac and Mary. >From here, going further back, all the action appears centered on South Cerney - leading eventually to William CHESTERMAN and Hester ? who must have married in about 1737. Mary Ann CHESTERMAN was recorded as coming from Cirencester in the 1851 census, I feel this is a little suspect as there were other inaccuracies, her husband's age was at least 5 years out and I have a feeling hers may have been as well. Any sightings of Mary Ann would be gratefully received, and any other siblings baptised between say 1803 & 1813 Hope this made sense All the best Dave Rossiter

    3. Can anyone help please, or have an opinion on the following which might launch me into lateral thought, space or deeper despair! I am trying to find a link between two PENTON families which has so far eluded myself and others. In his will dated 11 July 1832, Thomas PENTON, miller from Bransbury refers no less than 8 times to another, "Thomas PENTON, otherwise MUNDY, carpenter of Upper Clatford". Each time this same laborious phrase is repeated in full, and we are still having difficulty in locating a link - the puzzle is the "..otherwise MUNDY..." Does anyone have any experience of this type of reference in a Will - "..otherwise.."? We know there were 2 Thomas PENTONs in Upper Clatford at that time, one the son of the other, and we know the son was a carpenter. Could it be to differentiate between them? If so why not "jnr"? All opinions and views gratefully appreciated. 3. Hello Ann & all I am absolutely flummoxed about this. Went on familysearch.org to look up the numbers for you as I have looked at parish records for St Cuthbert's, Wells myself and knew there were PRs available. Well! Nothing is listed under church records for Wells other than 2 items that weren't church records by the sound of them. When I clicked on each one up popped a message saying that there were no film descriptions for them. So then I checked the CD that I have, "Family History Library Catalogue. Listed were lots of films both Parish Records and Bishops Transcripts for St Cuthberts. I checked by Place and then by Film or fiche number for the number that I had had and it was listed. 2. Gary Mason
    3. Wondering if SKS with access to the 1851 Census records for the Yatton area in Somerset, could kindly do a lookup for RUGG's in the area. My gg grandfather Charles RUGG was christened in Yatton on July 27, 1822 (and it looks like the family abode was actually Claverham), to Charles and Mary RUGG. Family lore has it that he had siblings, John born 1818 Helen born 1833 Mary Anne born 1824 I cannot find his parents place of birth. Although my Charles moved to Gloucester for the 1851 census there is no sign of his family in Gloucestershire. Regards, Gary Mason __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Maria and Dinah were daughters of Thomas & Dinah BENCH. I have not yet found a marriage for their sister, Mary (chr 1797), and have to wonder if this is she as a witness to the above marriages.
