    3. Hi Vicki, > John immigrated to Australia c1850 and was always referred to as a miner. If he migrated around 1850, that was during the Gold Rush. So I can't help thinking that "miner" may have been his intended occupation in Australia, rather than what he was in Somerset. <snip> > Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. Possibly you've already tried this. But do you have birth certificates for *all* his children? The reason I say that is that for my 2g-grandmother Ann BOWLES, only *one* of her children's Australian birth certificates nominates Ann's actual birthplace, which was Compton Dundon, Somerset. Cheers, Lesley (Melbourne, Australia...where the sun is blazing again. Ouch!)

    3. I am trying to trace Mary ( Polly ) PINNEY who I beleive married Henry J DOLMAN. She was my great aunt. She was born in 1874 at Martock in Somerset and was living with her parents at Montacute Nr Yeovil in 1891. She married Henry DOLMAN sometime after that and they ran the Jolly Trooper pub at Bradenstoke near Devizes where they were known to be in 1911. They were still living in the Devizes area in 1937. They had at least one son Hoping that someone may be able to help Jim Bratton

    3. I am hoping someone can offer some guidance regarding one of my Somerset ancestors. His name was John COURT and he was born in Somerset some time between 1820-1830. Whilst all official documentation indicates he was born in Somerset - a town or parish has never been specified. His likely birthdate varies, but has been confined to the 10 year time frame above. His death certificate indicated that his father's name was James. John immigrated to Australia c1850 and was always referred to as a miner. Given we have little else to help concentrate the search to a specific area, I am hoping that someone could advise the most likely areas for miners to have originated. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance. Vicki.

Hi Iain Perhaps he arrived on one of the many boats from the Baltic that used the S Wales ports bringing in timbers for the mining industry and taking out coal and got to liking a local lady and did a bit of mining, or whatever, to subsidize his stay. Or if he was Jewish he could have been a refugee: seem to remember they were always the subject of persecution in Russia. Also seem to remember that S Wales has quite a large Jewish population, in relative terms, due to persecution in E Europe, much like the East End of London did about this time although his name doesn't have that ring about it? 3. Hi Vicki As Ann-Marie says there certainly was quite a bit of mining of various types including coal, lead and copper carried out in various parts of North Somerset. If you haven't done so already, you might like to ask the same question on the Bristol and Somerset List: Bristol_and_Somerset-L-request@rootsweb.com where I am sure I've read items concerning miners in N Somerset and where I have a feeling there are also folk who have mining families. You could also have a look at the B&S list archives at: http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl input bristol_and_somerset as name of list and submit query. Then try the word "mining" in say the year 2000 and you should receive some 25 hits. Even if there are no links to your family you may at least get a feel for the areas you need to look at? 3. Somerset had a thriving coal mining industry. They even built the Somerset Coal Canal , which was a 17.75 mile, 23 lock, narrow canal from Paulton to Limpley Stoke where it joins the Kennet & Avon Canal. A lot of coal was also mined in the Bristol area until after WW2. And Bath is almost totally undermined by Bath stone workings. All in all, although I do not have the specific data, there were a good few miners in Somerset. 1. [WSX] FLOOK from Gloucestershire (plus one unusual stray).
    2. Dear Listers, On my gt. grandfather's marruage certificate from April 1864, one of the witnesses was a young woman called ELIZABETH FLOOK. The 1861 census shows her living at 23, Bridge Street, Tredegar, Monmouthshire in the household of Daniel Bennett (who could have been my 2x gt. grandfather's brother) as a niece, a domestic servant, unmarried, born in Gloucestershire. Purely as a matter of idle interest, can anyone out there put some flesh on her long-dead bones? The unusual surname caught my imagination! (Incidentally, as another item of non-familial interest, the lodger at 30, Morgan St., Tredegar was Vladimir POTEMKIN, born in Russia. What on earth was he doing in Tredegar in 1861??) Thanks in anticipation! Iain, in Brampton, Cumbria, UK.

    3. Hi, I am a new lister and would like to post my interests. My GGGGrandfather was born in Bishop Lydeard on 4 April 1830, the son of Thomas Bodger and Mary Rogers who were married in Bishop Lydeard on 19 May 1823 Thomas is probably the son of John Bodger born in 1765 at Kingston St Mary and his wife Betty, but this has yet to be proved. The problem I have is that here are 3 Thomas's born to John and Betty all at different time eg 1791, 1793 and 1802. It is suggested that as one son died in childhood the next son was given the same name. Is this likely and has anyone come across it?. I would love to hear from anyone researching the Bodger family especially if they were a descendant. Hope this makes sense but I'm quite new to this game. Thanks, ROBERT BODGER SYMONDS (Bob) Originally from Merthyr Tydfil now in Loughorough Leics)

    3. Hi Could the person in Ontario that answered my email question about the Wells Parish Records please send me the film number you ordered. I am sorry I accidentally deleted you email. I will try and find out why they are not offering the film for Wells, St Cuthberts anymore. But I need a film number to quote. The next challenge will be to get hold of the LDS. I am in BC Canada so I can phone them....hopefully! Thanks to David for your concern, but I am not trying to get a print out. Whenever I have ordered the parish records from the LDS I have gotten film of the original Parish records. That is what I am trying to get for Wells St Cuthbert in Somerset. There was another person who got the Wells Parish records also. If you can find the film record number that would be great. Thanks very much to everyone that answered this question. I knew people told me in the past they researched Wells, then when I went to get the records I couldn't find them. Glad I am not looking it altogether! Cheers Ann
