    1. [WSX] Beacham
    2. Donna M. Thomas
    3. I recently found on a cemetery record that a brother (William) to my James Beacham b. ca. 1804 was born in Somersetshire ENG March 1805. Both of these men lived in Northumberland Co, PA, USA by the mid to late 1840's. I am assuming that "my" James was also born in Somersetshire, ENG. According to US census records all of James's children were born in Pennsylvania as early as 1841. I can't find any reference to them in the 1840 census, so I am assuming they may have immigrated around that time. I know these are such common names in the Beacham line, but can anybody help? James was married to Annie Jones of Wales and William was married to a Maria also born in Wales. Both these men were miners. I know it isn't much but any help would be so very much appreciated. Donna

    1. [WSX] Do You Publish Genealogy on CDs?
    2. Stuart Raymond
    3. I have been commissioned to compile a listing of British genealogy on CD-Rom, to be published by the FFHS. My first step has been to identify as many publishers of CDs as I can, mainly be checking through past issues of 'Family Tree Magazine'. However, there are likely to be publishers that I have missed. If you publish CDs relevant to British genealogists (or know of publishers whom I am likely to have missed), and have not heard from me in the last couple of weeks, I would be grateful if you could get in touch by emailing me at stuart@samjraymond.softnet.co.uk The information I need includes: contact details; titles of CDs; system requirements; content of CDs if not fully explained by titles; prices. I propose to list all CDs relating to the whole of the British Isles, including England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, and the offshore islands. However, I will not, in general, list CDs which are programs without factual information. I already have information on a couple of hundred CDs, and it is apparent that there is a huge mass of information out there which is difficult for interested genealogists to identify without a full listing. If you would like information about this project when it comes to fruition, please let me know. My apologies for cross-posting, but it is obviously important for the whole genealogical community that I receive as much information as possible. 1. [WSX] HANKS and CLARKE Horsley/Nailsworth
    2. Kaye Purnell
    3. G'day Can any help with these difficult non-conformist families? Entries on my GLS Immigrants to Australia pre 1888 Index. Arriving as Bounty Immigrants per "Bussorah Merchant" Sydney 1839 Phoebe HANKS a widow aged 47, needlewoman of Nailsworth; with her were her chn James 20, Eliza 18 and Thomas 16. Phoebe's parents are given as Thomas BRINKWORTH and Sarah. Phoebe was a Baptist; she is mentioned on the Baptist emigrants list as being a member at Harley Wood from 9 Mar 1824. The deaths of her chn suggest her dead husband was named Thomas HANKS; a patron submission to the IGI suggests a marriage at Horsley 28 Jul 1802 - if this is correct Phoebe's age is grossly understated on arrival. Also on board was widow Lucy HANKS aged 25 with her dau Elizabeth aged 5. IGI has a parish extraction for the marriage of Lucy CLARKE to John HANKS at Horsley 19 Nov 1831. It is sensible to assume that John HANKS was another son of Phoebe and Thomas? HANKS. Lucy's parents Joseph CLARKE and Mary nee WHEELER were also on board with their chn Lucy 29, Sarah 27, James 22, Daniel 21, Ruth 19, Maryann 17, Joseph 16, Samuel 14 & Maria 12, also their married dau Hannah SAUNDERS. This family described themselves as Quaker. There is a patron submission on the IGI for their marriage at Horsley 14 Jul 1805. Also on board was Eliza HANKS aged 30 described as married but no husband on board, a Baptist, with son George aged 9. Betsey (sic) HANKS is also on the Baptist Emigrants list; she is described as a member at Rockness Hill since 21 Nov 1833. Her son George is described as the son of William & Elizabeth HANKS, born Harley Wood 19 Oct 1829. There is a parish extraction for a marriage at Horsley for William HANKS and Elizabeth HANKS (sic) 18 Jan 1829. Eliza's parents are given as John, a weaver and Hannah, presumably John HANKS and Hannah. Therefore it seems reasonable that the dead? William HANKS was another son of Phoebe and Thomas? HANKS. Any interest in or knowledge of these families? This time they are connected to me, in that one of the CLARKE sons married into my JEFFERIES family in NSW. Their children were AAron and I have tracked him to BathSt.James ,widowed and living with unmarried daughter Amelia-have no idea who or when he married. Yet another girl named Ruth was born in 1n 1853. In the 1881 census Thos Smith, 80, is a widower living in Faringdon Gurney. 1. [WSX] ROYAL - QUEENS 'Pardon'
    2. The surname of my maternal great grandfather was BREWER[dob circa 1858] from Bath, Somerset. I have the original of a document which, to my lay eye appears to be a 'Royal' or 'Queens Pardon'. It is addressed to: K. Bartrum Esquire, [?solicitor?] 6 Northumberland Buildings, Bath. It reads, Whitehall. 13th. February 1873. 19755. "Sir. The Secretary of State for the Home Department having considered your application in behalf of GEORGE BREWER. I have the satisfaction to acquaint you that he has felt warranted under all the circumstances in advising Her Majesty to remit the remainder of the prisoner's sentence. I am Sir, Your obedient Servant, etc.,etc.." On the one hand I have no idea what offence my ancestor had committed, and on the other, family rumour hints that the pardon was granted because George Brewer had subsequently heroically saved a person from drowning. I have a photograph of an adolescent looking George wearing what appears to be a 'reform training-ship' type of pseudo naval uniform. Does any 'listee' have suggestions where I might trace the nature of the offence and the subsequent events which led to the 'pardon'? Annoyingly my failing memory hampers my ability to recall the name of the well known albeit antiquated Reformatory School which served the Bristol/North Somerset area until about 15 years ago. If George served his sentence at this place, has any 'listee' knowledge of where the records are deposited? Alec Palmer. Weymouth. Dorset. xx. ii. mmi.

    3. Hi Listers. Many thanks to all who have assisted in tracing the above family. It would appear that John Bodger arrived in Llandaff betweem 1851 and 1855, from Somerset, married Catherine and started producing children, as confirmed by the census figures of 1861, 1881 and 1891 I am almost certain now that John Bodger's grandfather, also named John, who was born in Kingston St Mary, Somerset in 1765 is the earliest ancestor that I can find. So here goes trying to get back further. Isn't this great fun. Bob Symonds (Loughborough, Leics)

    1. [WSX] GLS & Bristol Convicts to Oz 1827
    2. Kaye Purnell
    3. Gday While helping on another project I had my first experience of the surviving shipping records and indents of convicts tried Bristol and GLS who were transported to VDL (Tasmania). These are of differing quality; for some reason far fewer full indents survive than for NSW transportees, though where they exist they are excellent. Also for some transports there survive lists of personal baggage brought with them by the convicts, and details of any valuables (money, rings etc) that they may have had with them which were lodged with the ships surgeon during the voyage - fascinating stuff. For my own index I was interested to compare the stated Native Place of those tried Gloucester with the place given as "address" in Wyatt's "GLS Transportees". These are the indent details given for those tried Gloucester who were transported to TAS per Andromeda arriving 23 Feb 1827. I have not copied all info given (such as descriptions) but have included details of interest or those which may help in identification. NP = native place Peter ALDRIDGE aged 25, shepherd & sheep shearer. NP Horsley [Wyatt says Nailsworth]. Married with 2 chn. Crime: stealing fowls - 7 years. Previously convicted at Gloucester for stealing a coat - sentence 6 weeks; for stealing fowls - sentence 9 months. Charles BESSELL aged 20, shoemaker & servant. NP Bristol. Single. Crime : burglary - tried with GROVES, DENNER & EVANS - Life. James BUTLER, aged 22, groom & jockey. NP Ennis, Co Clare. Single. Crime: stealing in a dwelling house - Life. William CHIVERS aged 24, postman & groom. NP Melksham, WIL. Single. Crime: burglary - Life. John CONSTABLE, aged 39, sawyer - top & bottom. NP Lechlade. Married with 1 child. Crime: burglary - Life. William CURTIS aged 27, groom & coachman. NP Kilkenny. Single. Crime: burglary - Life. John DENNER aged 19, blacksmiths lad. NP Bristol. Single. Crime: burglary - tried with EVANS, BESSELL & GROVES - Life. Previously convicted at Bristol of stealing copper coins to the value of 8/-; 8 months. William EVANS aged 21, house painter. NP Bristol. Single. Crime: burglary, tried with GROVES, BESSELL & DENNER - Life. George GREENWOOD aged 17, bargeman. NP Gloucester. [Wyatt says Hull YKS]. Crime: stealing boat oars? - 7 years. Richard GROVES aged 23, shoemaker. NP Exeter. [Wyatt says St Peters Bristol]. Crime: burglary - tried with EVANS, BESSELL & DENNER - Life. William HARRIS aged 24, lime burner, farmer & ploughman. NP Gloucestershire [Wyatt says English Bicknor]. Single. Crime: sheep stealing - Life. Joseph HATHERILL aged 26, labourer. NP Horsley [Wyatt says Uley]. Single. Crime: burglary - Life Robert HYETT aged 22, ploughman, shepherd & shearer. NP Gloucester City [Wyatt says Blakeney]. Single. Crime: stealing from person to the value of 8/6 - Life. Previously convicted of absconding from service - sentence 3 weeks. Had deserted from 28 th Regt when taken for this offence. Thomas JAMES aged 18, labourer & japanner. NP Bristol. Single. Crime: burglary - Life. Tried before at Gloucester for picking pockets but acquitted. James JONES aged 30, book keeper. NP Macather? Embling, Glamorgan [Wyatt says Newcastle, Carmarthen]. Crime: horse stealing - Life. George KING aged 20, groom. NP Gloucester [Wyatt says Cheltenham]. Single. Crime: stealing in a dwelling house - Life. Thomas MILLARD aged 28, farmer & ploughman, a shepherd for 9 years. NP Tytherington GLS. Single. Crime: burglary - Life. Previously convicted of burglary - sentence 2 years. John MILLS aged 17, labourer. NP Yate. Crime: stealing geese - 7 years. Thomas PEGLER aged 26, farmer & ploughman. NP Dodington [Wyatt says Dyrham & Hinton]. Married; 1 child. Crime: highway robbery - tried with TURNER - Life. Previous conviction for assault - fined 20/- George PRICE aged 18, weaver. NP Eastington. Single. Crime: burglary - Life. Previously convicted at Gloucester for stealing a watch - 18 months. William SAXTON aged 34, upholsterer. NP Shrewsbury. Crime: stealing in a dwelling house to the value of 40/-; Life. A soldier in the 32 Regt 19th Dragoons for 14 years. Single. James TURNER aged 41, farmer & ploughman. NP Boxwell [Wyatt says Leighterton]. Widowed; 5 chn. Crime: highway robbery - tried with PEGLER - Life. Previously imprisoned for 1 month for absconding. William WALLINGTON aged 24, shoemaker. NP Hillesley. Married, 1 child. Crime: burglary - Life. John WATKINS, aged 21, edge tool maker & blacksmith. NP Stroudwater [Wyatt says Randwick]. Single. Crime: stealing in a dwelling house - Life. Previously convicted of stealing a shirt - 1 week; stealing edge tools - 2 months. So we have a sample of 24 men tried at Gloucester during 1826. All received life sentences, except 3 tried for (seemingly) very minor offences who received 7 year sentences. Almost all their crimes were stealing from a dwelling house, or burglary (burglary was the crime of entering a building AT NIGHT with intent to commit a felony). Of those for whom status was given, 5 were said to be married or widowed. Most were of the ag lab, shoemaker, servant calling, although there were a few tradesmen - blacksmith, sawyer, house painter, and 1 book keeper. There are substantial differences between the convict indents and Wyatt here; my thought would be that Wyatt records occupation at time of trial, while indent records everything that they were capable of, in an attempt to guide potential employers in TAS. 5 were aged under 20, 16 were aged 20-30, 2 were aged 30-40, and 1 over 40. Only about 1 in 3 had been before the courts before; we are often told that transportees were hardened criminals! Although tried at Gloucester 6 were born outside the county. There are some differences between the native place given on the indent and the addresses as given in Wyatt [which are described as EITHER parishes of settlement OR places of temporary residence OR of origin]. Some of these are a matter of a different village a few miles away but some are substantial. All these men born GLS will have an entry on my GLS Immigrants to Australia pre 1888 Index and I would welcome more info. 3. OK - I'll try and make this the last one:-) Although not hosted by Rootsweb Jim has reminded me that there is another list for Wiltshire apart from Wilthsire-EMI which I haven't mentioned yet. This is the Moonrakers List which is now hosted by Yahoo, which you can subscribe to by sending an e-mail to: moonrakers-subscribe@yahoogroups.com You will then receive a message from Yahoo asking you to return the message to confirm the subscription. To those who might raise an eyebrow at my recommendation I can confirm from personal experience that this is a much reformed list and that although it is run on a more relaxed basis than some Rootsweb lists it is nevertheless now worth joining as no doubt more than one or two list members here can confirm? :-) Regards Paul Portland
