Hi All, Could someone do a look up for me in the 1881 census for Winchester Hampshire, the address is: 129, HIGH STREET, WINCHESTER, HAMPSHIRE. Hopefully it will be the CARR family. Thanks. Annette.
G'day This is one of the wills I had success with from the GLS R O site http://www.gloscc.gov.uk/pubserv/gcc/corpserv/archives/genealogy.htm (please note I have included the site this time!) The will of my husbands 5xgt-grandfather Samuel PURNELL of Stroud. His will states that he leaves all his personal effects to his son Daniel PURNELL. He directs that his 2 dwelling houses on Strouds Hill in the parish of Stroud, currently in the occupation of himself and his tenant John KING be sold after his death by his executors William AYERS of Stroud, plasterer, and James HOLDER of Stroud, cordwainer, and the receipts paid to his son Daniel. After 3 pages of closely written legalese he signed with a cross on 5 Dec 1843. The will was apparently drawn up by P H FISHER of Stroud, and witnessed by him and by his clerk Chas HUMPHREYS. On 27 Feb 1847 William AYRES of Stroud, plasterer and tiler appeared. He was the surviving executor. Samuel PURNELL had died 11 Jul 1844 leaving goods, chattels and credits under the value of £20. Probate was granted. On the 1841 census Samuel PURNELL was living on the northern side of SUMMER ST Stroud. His wife Ann was nee KING and it is likely his tenant John KING (whom I would assume lived next door) was a relative. On our visit to GLS in the glorious summer of 1995, we took photos of a couple of double-storey attached cottages (we would call them terraces in Oz) which looked old enough to have been there in 1841. Is there anyone familiar enough with Summer St to know if this could be the case? Regards Kaye Kaye Purnell <kayepur@ozemail.com.au> Ancestors from GLS who came to Oz? G'day I have had the following enquiry for my GLS Immigrants to Australia pre 1888 Index. >Charles Tangier Miller was (according to marriage, birth and death >certificates in Australia) born at Ozleworth Park, Wootten Under Edge, >Gloucestershire, England in 1831. He was the son of William Miller, army >Officer, and Amelia Wyndham. I have checked Pigots' 1830 Directory and there is a William MILLER Esq listed at Ozleworth. Unfortunately there are no LDS Films for WuE or Ozleworth at the appropriate period. My correspondent is going to contact the WuE Resource Centre by mail; but has anyone any knowledge of this family? Please note this is not my family, an entry on my GLS Immigrants to Australia pre 1888 Index. Regards Kaye Kaye Purnell <kayepur@ozemail.com.au> Ancestors from GLS who came to Oz? Hi Angela These are from the British Isles VRI CD: I can't find a marriage for John and Elizabeth, but there is perhaps a marriage for John and Mary at Poole in 1818 perhaps followed by Mary going home to Poole to have her first born ie John Gregory in 1820, followed later by your George John in Dorchester in 1826, after which perhaps Mary may have died? Perhaps he could have then married Elizabeth, resulting in Georgina 1828 and your Frederick 1833, perhaps making him a half brother to George? Lots of "ifs" "maybe's" and "perhaps" there though, and although Gregory isn't a common name in the area it isn't that unusual either as there appear to be GREGORYs out at nearby Puddletown/Piddletown etc: and of course the VRI CDs don't include all the Dorset parishes: shall I leave my suppositions as food for thought :-) >GREGORY, John Gregory Lander Christening Sex: Male > Christening Date: 22 Mar 1820 Recorded in: Saint James, Poole, Dorset, England > Father: John GREGORY Mother: Mary Source: FHL Number 1239221 Dates: 1802-1830 >GREGORY, George John Christening Sex: Male > Christening Date: 16 Jul 1826 Recorded in: All Saints, Dorchester, Dorset, England > Father: John GREGORY Mother: Mary Source: FHL Number 1279495 Dates: 1814-1880 >GREGORY, Georginna Inggs Christening Sex: Female > Christening Date: 27 Jan 1828 Recorded in: All Saints, Dorchester, Dorset, England > Father: John GREGORY Mother: Elizabeth Source: FHL Number 1279495 Dates: 1814-1880 >GREGORY, Frederick William Smith Christening Sex: Male > Christening Date: 10 Apr 1833 Recorded in: Saint Peter, Dorchester, Dorset, England > Father: John GREGORY Mother: Elizabeth Source: FHL Number 1279495 Dates: 1730-1879 >GREGORY, John Marriage Wife: Mary Ann WILLS > Marriage Date: 23 Mar 1818 Recorded in: Saint James, Poole, Dorset, England >Source: FHL Number 1239221 Dates: 1802-1830 If you haven't done so - don't forget to join the Dorset List - the subscribe address is: DORSET-L-request@rootsweb.com Regards Paul Portland On Thu, 22 Feb 2001 03:28:50 -0000, you wrote: >Hi > >Am looking for any info re GREGORY. My apologies for showing my ignorance here, folks. While I attended grammar school, I didn't do much history! One of my ancestors was a Richard BABY, born 1787. While the main part of his family is documented, he had an illegitimate son with a "lady" from Brussels. My notes, which came from an elderly relative, say: "A Colour Sergeant in the Army. Saw service in the Peninsular Wars, hence his presence in Belgium". I'm assuming this means he was in the army as he also later lived in Mallow, Cork, Ireland and I was told by a knowledgable person that the most likely reason for his prescence there was that he was in the army. The question is: how do I find out which regiment he was in, so that I can possibly (if they still exist) get hold of his records? I'm researching "the Peninsular Wars" at the moment, and it seems that my Richard was part of the campaign helping the Spanish to defeat Napoleon. If anyone could shed any light on these points, I would be MOST grateful. It will point me in the right direction! Many thanks in advance, Linda Derham
